Particle identification via pulse-shape discrimination with a charge-integrating ADC

Abstract A charge-integrating ADC has been used to sample the intensity in two different time regions of a pulse and thus to sense the shape of the pulse. This idea has been applied to produce neutron/γ-ray discrimination from pulses in a liquid scintillation detector. Optimization of available parameters yields good pulse-shape discrimination for pulses greater than those produced by 100 keV electrons. The method uses only general purpose electronics.

A simple two-dimensional PPAC

D. Swan; J. Yurkon; D. J. Morrissey

Abstract A two-dimensional position sensitive parallel-plate avalanche (PPAC) detector developed for routine use in the MSU/NSCL fragment separator is described. Each 2D-PPAC provides reasonably accurate position measurements over its 10 × 10 cm2 aperture for a very large range of energetic ions. The detectors are relatively low cost and can be easily rebuilt if the pressure windows fail. Numerous complete devices have been constructed and have been used routinely at the NSCL and other laboratories. Typical results for the time and position resolution of the detectors are reported.

A time-projection chamber (TPC) called the SAMURAI Pion-Reconstruction and Ion-Tracker (S pi RIT) has recently been constructed at Michigan State University as part of an international effort to constrain the symmetry-energy term in the nuclear Equation of State (EoS). The S pi RIT TPC will be used in conjunction with the SAMURAI spectrometer at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) at RIKEN to measure yield ratios for pions and other light isospin multiplets produced in central collisions of neutron-rich heavy ions, such as Sn-132+Sn-124. The S pi RIT TPC can function both as a TPC detector and as an active target. It has a vertical drift length of 50 cm, parallel to the magnetic field. Gas multiplication is achieved through the use of a multi-wire anode plane. Image charges, produced in the 12096 pads, are read out with the recently developed Generic Electronics for TPCs
