The paper presents a process of technical diagnostic applied to a fleet of vehicles utilized in the delivery system of express mail. It is focused on evaluation of diagnostic capacity of particular characteristics, reduction of a set of initially selected characteristics to a minimal and satisfactory subset, recognition of a technical condition of vehicles resulting in their condition-based classification. In addition, the decision rules facilitating technical diagnostic and management of a fleet of vehicles are generated and utilized. N-fold cross validation is applied to estimate the efficiency of the decision rules. The rough set theory is applied to support the diagnostic process of vehicles. Classical rough set (CRS) theory is compared with the dominance-based rough set (DRS) approach. The results of computational experiments for both approaches are compared.

In the paper novelty vehicle trajectories random field (VTRF) traffic representation dedicated to networked hard real-time traffic control systems is presented and illustrated by PIACON control method. It is emphasized that existing multiple type high spatial resolution satellite and air based imagery together with conventional video, laser, GPS, probe-vehicles technologies are sufficient for VTRF estimation and prediction. Many advantages of VTRF proposal unattainable by conventional traffic models in the area of traffic control, surveillance and management problems are presented. The VTRF cases of spatiotemporal traffic random fields automatically selected by area traffic situation markers are illustrative for PIACON method..

This chapter describes specialized transportation – focused computer-based Decision Support Systems (DSS-s). The definition and classification of transportation – oriented DSS-s are presented and specific features of up-to-date DSS-s applied in transportation are characterized. Major categories of decision problems, including operational, tactical and strategic ones, solved by transportation – oriented DSS-s are presented. Current research trends in designing and developing DSS-s for transportation are discussed. Principal methodologies facilitating the decision making processes supported by transportation-focused DSS-s as well as current information technologies applied in those systems are reported. The chapter includes a review of 43 DSS-s applied by different transportation sectors, such as: road, urban, air, rail and seaborne transportation.

The paper presents the application of varies OR techniques to the redesign of the distribution systems. Two real-world case studies are considered. In the first case study the optimization (mathematical programming) approach is discussed. In the second case study heuristic design of different variants of the distribution system supported by object oriented simulation combined with their multiple criteria evaluation is carried out. The following OR techniques and tools are applied: single and bi-criterion mathematical programming, object oriented simulation, multiple criteria ranking methods. The results of computational experiments are presented.
