Career Education for the Forgotten.

Susan L. McBain; Jack A. Hamilton

Cuba, participating in the large-scale exodus of Cuban nationals to this country. She is thirty years old, able to write and speak fairly good English, separated from the rest of her family remaining in Cuba, and drastically in need of a job. She has applied for a position as a receptionist at a small electronics firm. The employer has just finished reviewing Oneida’s application form and listening to her answer the telephone in some simulated situations he had posed to her. At last he tells her, &dquo;Miss Gonzales, I would like to hire you but I can tell you don’t know how to use the telephone very well. That’s a problem because my receptionist, in addition to writing and typing letters, would have to place and answer quite a few phone calls. And, while your appearance is fine, I’m not sure you could handle the phone calls very well. I’m sorry to have to be so discouraging, Miss Gonzales, but there’s no way that I can hire you for this position now. I’ll keep your application. on file, but I’m afraid you need to learn some basic telephone skills. After you’ve done that, come back and give it another try.&dquo;
