The changing role of migration and natural increase in suburban population growth: The case of a non-capital post-socialist city (The Krakow Metropolitan Area, Poland)

Sławomir Kurek; Mirosław Wójtowicz; Jadwiga Gałka

Abstract The evolution of population distributions in the Krakow Metropolitan Area (KMA) in Poland is subject to analysis in this contribution. Changes and recent reversals in the relationships between the main components of total population growth (natural increase and net migration) are examined in order to determine the level of development of suburbanisation processes in zones of the KMA, with the use of the Webb typology. Research was carried out in four time points: 1988, 1995, 2002 and 2012, covering the year just before the collapse of the socialist regime, the first decade of political and socio-economic transition, and the period before and after accession to the EU. The analysis of differentials in natural increase and net migration is conducted within the context of residential suburbanisation in the KMA, using as a background context recent population developments in Poland and Polish cities. Implications for urban policy arising from changes in the spatial concentration of the population in the metropolitan area are discussed.

Rola emigracji klasy kreatywnej w przemianach gospodarki innowacyjnej w Polsce

Jadwiga Gałka; Sławomir Dorocki

The innovativeness of an economy is one of the indicators of national and regional economic development. It is widely accepted that a major factor in the development of a knowledge-based economy is highly skilled human capital. Due to a high demand for an educated workforce and the intensifying process of globalization, which undermines migration barriers, the process of „brain drain” can be increasingly observed in the modern world. This process includes educated and very well educated individuals who are attracted by highly developed regions and countries. Therefore, this selective type of migration has a negative impact on the innovative potential of poorer areas. The aim of this paper is to show how international migration from Poland following the enlargement of the European Union affected the quality of the job applicant pool in Poland. We also want to show how international migration affects the level of innovation on a local scale. We used different sources of data to achieve our goals. This included statistical data provided by the Central Statistical Office (Polish acronym: GUS) and 92 jadwiga galka, Slawomir dorocki survey data collected among Polish immigrants in London in 2010. Research has shown that, following Poland’s entry into the European Union, changes in the quality of the job applicant pool are evident in large cities such as Warsaw, Krakow and Poznan. The innovativeness of an economy is one of the indicators of national and regional economic development. Areas of Socio-demographic Hazards in the Lubelskie Voivodeship, at the Turn of the XX and XXI Century

Jadwiga Gałka

The aim of the article was to point out reasons for the existence and spatial location of areas of socio-demographic hazards within the voivodeship, compared with the situation in the whole country, during the period of structural transformation. In order to achieve this objective, we have used the method of the demographic regress chain. The current level and deployment of the examined phenomenon both in Poland, and in the Lubelskie voivodeship, have been deeply influenced by particular demographic processes, which have taken place after the II World War, among others, the settlement of the western and northern lands, the level of internal migrations, dynamics of the natural movement, urbanization processes and various disparities regarding the national economic development. As far as the Lubelskie voivodeship is concerned, the areas which were mostly endangered with depopulation were the regions of limited communication accessibility, bad natural conditions, low level of economic development, or even real longstanding diminution of population, and major deformations within demographic structures. However, the low level of hazards was observed in the cities of the region, which was associated with the good demographic situation of these units.

Differentiation of reproductive behaviour of the population of the Kraków Metropolitan Area in the light of survey research

Jadwiga Gałka; Sławomir Kurek; Mirosław Wójtowicz

Abstract Metropolitan areas are the poles of economic growth of regions and countries. These areas are characterized by specific development cycles, which are related to the direction of population migrations. Accordingly, there is a phase of urbanisation, suburbanisation, disurbanisation and re-urbanisation. Studies show that most Polish metropolitan areas are undergoing the process of suburbanisation, which means the movement of population from the central city to its suburban area. This process entails a number of demographic, social and economic consequences. One of the main demographic consequences of suburbanisation is the change in the structure of the central city and its suburban area. The reason for this is the fact that migrations from the centre are usually undertaken by young people. Thus, the number of inhabitants of the central city declines and the population is ageing. Migrants from the city bring new patterns of social and demographic behaviour, which may be shown in, among others, the tendencies of indigenous people to change the traditional family model. This paper attempts to determine the reproductive behaviour patterns of the population of the Krakow Metropolitan Area (KMA) in the light of the survey. The surveys were conducted in selected KMA municipalities in 2013. The analysis of qualitative data, divided into two categories of respondents: immigrant and indigenous inhabitants, will give an answer to the question, what are the reproductive attitudes of the population and how they may affect the further development of these areas?

Refugees in Poland: Selected Issues in Research

Jadwiga Gałka

Refugees in Poland: Selected Issues in Research Since the beginning of the 1990s, there has been a steadily growing influx of foreign refugees in Poland. Polands ratification of the Geneva Convention in 1991 and the New York Protocol in 1991 made it necessary to create a properly functioning refugee protection system in the country. The purpose of this work is to describe the dynamics of refugee influx in Poland from 1992 to 2007 as well as to analyze whether existing forms of legal stay are functioning properly in Poland. Furthermore, the work attempts to delve into key issues associated with the social integration of refugees in Poland.
