Key challenges in the development of an infrastructure for hydrogen production, delivery, storage and use

J.W. Kim; K.J. Boo; Jae Hyun Cho; I. Moon

Abstract: It is predicted that hydrogen will become a major source of energy in the coming decades. For this to happen, an infrastructure needs to be built and developed. A full network for hydrogen production, storing the hydrogen, transporting the hydrogen and refuelling hydrogen-powered systems will need to be constructed. To create this, the estimated cost will be in the trillions of dollars. Different countries have set up plans and organizations to organize the building of the infrastructure. There are many barriers to overcome, such as cost, government policy and public opinion. It will lead to a transition from oil to hydrogen, and reduce the world’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Development of COI classification algorithm for chemical terrorism

This study focused on a novel approach for classifying hazardous chemicals to be used for chemical terrorism. We developed a novel algorithm to classify nationally customized chemicals of interest (COI) out of 325 COI in USA. The proposed COI classification algorithm aims to identify a key set of factors that reflect nation-wide uniqueness: intentional use, objectives, toxicity, related laws (CWC, ITF-25, CAA, etc.) and responsive counter-actions to terrorism. Although the U.S. has managed 325 COI to prevent terrorism, there are some nations in which the management and control of all the hazardous chemicals are beyond their capability. Based upon the outcome of this study the Ministry of the Environment of Korea has made appropriate revisions on relevant law. As a result, the Korean government has officially added a new set of 13 chemical species to the list of existing hazardous chemicals. This work is worthwhile to contribute to protecting the people’s lives and property from possible chemical accidents including terror by chemicals.

Recipe-based Batch Process Engineering Tool for Development Workflow

Jae Hyun Cho; Junghwan Kim; Il Moon

Abstract This paper presents the extensive upgrades of Aspen Batch Process Developer™ (ABPD) that is a recipe-based batch process modeling and simulation environment, designed to employ over the entire life cycle of processes from early synthetic route selection to plant scale engineering. The user interface, in particular, operations dialog re-written in C# is of high customization. A number of enhanced provisions have been incorporated to support data management. A set of challenging schedule issues that have routinely exhibited in industrial processes, but not provided complete solutions in commercial tools yet, are addressed. Generic approach for industrial solutions is implemented, in combination with automatic scheduling and interactive scheduling constraints over multi-levels of process representation hierarchy.
