This paper presents the trend of physical layer designs for WBAN systems in IEEE 802.15.6 proposals. According to the technical requirement of the WBAN task group, many companies and research institutes have proposed physical layer architectures to provide fundamental technologies for the WBAN communication systems. Since there are various service scenarios for in-body or on-body applications, the physical layer proposals include UWB as well as narrowband techniques. Hence we summarize the design issues for the physical layer proposals with the category of narrowband and UWB signals. The key features of the proposals are described with the frequency bands, modulations, and other technical aspects.

This paper proposes a new modulation scheme for high data rate WBAN in-body communication systems. Simulation results are presented in terms of performance, modulation options, spectrum re-growth due to non-linearity and roll-off values of pulse shaping filter. In addition link budget planning explains that the proposed modulation approach is appropriate for high data rate applications in the body channel environment.

This paper proposes a new modulation scheme for high data rate WBAN in-body communication systems. We propose a π/4-shifted differential 8-PSSK scheme that includes its architectures for the transmitter and receiver. Simulation results are presented in terms of performance, modulation options and frequency tolerance.

In this paper, we propose signal-modeling of the block-coded group pulse position modulation (BC-GPPM) for the wireless body area network (WBAN). The BC-GPPM is one of modulation methods for the WBAN application taking the technical requirements such as data-rate scalability, low complexity and low-power. This paper describes concept of WBAN non-coherent standard related to BC-GPPM and proposes a BC-GPPM signal-modeling derived from the conventional pulse position modulation (PPM).

This paper presents non-coherent synchronization method for UWB WBAN systems. The non-coherent synchronization including packet detection and SFD detection is described and packet error rate performance in AWGN is provided. Finally, we make a conclusion in view of the implemental aspect.
