This paper empirically studies the performance of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique. A practical test system in power system studies is selected as a testing function. The test system takes into account the valve-point effects. The study aims to tune four main parameters involved in the PSO implementation in a typical economic load dispatch problem. The experimental results illustrate the best values to be chosen for PSOs different parameters. The various ranges of a penalty factor were tested and the paper determines which range of values is best suited in the tested economic dispatch problem.

Different types of optimization method have been used in many applications for solving the complex system. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is one of the most popular optimization methods that have been widely used. However, the original PSO have its own limitation. Thus, many researchers have introduced the modification on PSO to improve the performance and efficiency. In this paper, the concept of Iterative Particle Swarm Optimization (IPSO) method is implemented in sizing the DG units and the performance compared with two others optimization methods which are Evolutionary Programming (EP) and Artificial Immune System (AIS). By applying the extra parameter in new velocity of each particle before updating the position, IPSO gave the superior results compared to EP and AIS for achieving the global optimal values. The performance of IPSO in DG sizing has been tested on 69 bus distribution system with 4 units of DG that operate in PV mode. In terms of power loss reduction and voltage profile, the IPSO gives superior results than EP and AIS obtained.

This paper presents a digitized Walsh function algorithm as an alternative approach for power components estimation with emphasis on reactive power measurement in linear and nonlinear three-phase load system. The developed algorithm was modeled on the Matlab Simulink software; linear and nonlinear loads were modeled based on practical voltage and current waveforms and tested with the proposed improved Walsh algorithm. IEEE standard 1459-2000 which is based on fast Fourier transform FFT approach was used as benchmark for the linear load system while a laboratory experiment validates the proposed improved algorithm for nonlinear load measurement. The results showed that the algorithm can effectively measure three-phase reactive power components under different load conditions. Walsh function unified approach has high inherent accuracy level as a result of coefficient features and energy behaviour representation.
