A guerra e as laranjas: uma palestra radiofônica sobre o valor alimentício das frutas nacionais (1940)

Jaime Rodrigues; Maria da Penha Vasconcellos

Since the early twentieth-century, sanitarians have relied on the radio for educational purposes. Men like Geraldo Horacio de Paula Souza and Borges Vieira used radio waves to popularize hygienic habits and disseminate information on sanitary topics. On April 16, 1940, Paula Souza stood before the microphones at Radio Educadora Paulista and gave a lecture on the nutritional value of oranges and the need to eat them as a patriotic act. Touting the fruits nutritional qualities, Paula Souza launched the orange campaign. Its success reached beyond the borders of Sao Paulo state, as the campaign found space in the press and took form as an advertising brochure published by the Agricultural Information Service, with the unconditional support of the Minister of Agriculture, Fernando Costa.

Alimentação popular em São Paulo (1920 a 1950): políticas públicas, discursos técnicos e práticas profissionais

Jaime Rodrigues

This article discusses how the concept of lower-class eating habits came about and developed in the intellectual circles of Sao Paulo during the first half of the 20th century. It starts by reconstructing the elements of the debate around the income and ignorance of the underprivileged as the main reasons behind their bad eating habits. Then, it looks at the focal points for interventions and public policies proposed by the government to deal with the problem thus identified, namely: training methods to produce sanitation counselors capable of offering dietary guidance as well; popular educational campaigns and new learning sites in addition to schools (e.g. healthcare centers and households); lunch and other means of offering food at schools; and diagnostic studies about food intake and eating habits among laborers. Because they were translated into technical and scientific language, the proposals and policies implemented in Sao Paulo left traces in a variety of supporting documents and media (photographs, primers, posters, inquiry notebooks, and academic literature).

Circulação atlântica: idade, tempo de trabalho e funções de escravos e libertos na marinha mercante luso-brasileira, séculos XVIII e XIX

Jaime Rodrigues

Abstract From elements of histories of professional life that can be built even fragmentary way, I try to identify forms of involvement in the Luso-Brazilian merchant marine of slaves and freedmen, born in Africa, Portugal and Portuguese America. The temporality goes from the 1760s (when the first records of crew enrollment began to be made) until the year 1820. The text seeks to inventory the functions performed by these men, and present data of character census, such as age that were initiated in the world of maritime labor and time of their experience in the professions of the sea.

Um mundo novo no Atlântico: marinheiros e ritos de passagem na linha do equador, séculos XV-XX

Jaime Rodrigues

The article analyzes the rite of passage upon crossing the Equator line and its transformations. In the 20th century the persistence of this ritual gave the impression that its form had always been the same. However, looking at the sources from the 16th century, we can understand its origin, dissemination, and transformation in maritime culture. Sailors and officers participated in the construction of ritual, full of significance for the professional life of men working at sea. The sources used here are basically travel narratives from the period in question.
