Internal reflection on a watch glass surrounded by water: A simple experiment and a variation

When a watch is submerged in water, an observer might come to realize that the glass surface appears silver, like a mirror, due to internal reflection. However, it is not possible to clearly identify in which surface - internal or external - this reflection occurs. An experimental variation is proposed, using a thicker glass, allowing better identification of the inner surface as the reflector, along with hints for qualitative and quantitative discussions.

O Sonho de Johannes Kepler: uma tradução do primeiro texto de hard sci-fi

O artigo apresenta uma tradução do texto póstumo de Johannes Kepler, intitulado Somnium, o qual foi publicado em 1634. Apesar de ter sido originalmente publicado como um tratado sobre a astronomia lunar, o formato do texto permite classificá-lo também como um precursor da ficção cient́ıfica moderna. São sugeridas também algumas atividades pedagógicas, adequadas para a educação básica, que poderiam ser desenvolvidas a partir do manuscrito. Cosmográficos: representando o espaço ao longo do tempo

Apresenta-se uma resenha critica do livro de divulgacao cientifica ”Cosmigraphics - picturing space through time”, de autoria do artista e escritor Michael Benson. O livro apresenta uma historia da astronomia contada de forma nao usual, a partir das representacoes imageticas sobre o cosmos. A obra e composta de dez capitulos tematicos, nos quais sao apresentadas, discutidas e correlacionadas diferentes representacoes graficas de corpos e fenomenos celestes, tais como a Lua, o Sol, a origem do universo ou as auroras. As imagens foram produzidas em diversos momentos da historia humana, contribuindo para demonstrar a astronomia - e a ciencia como um todo - como uma criacao humana, condicionada pela cultura na qual o conhecimento e construido. Defende-se que o livro de Benson pode se revelar de grande valia para os professores de fisica de ensino medio, dada a importância de se conhecer a historia da astronomia, a qual esta presente na organizacao curricular proposta na nova Base Nacional Comum Curricular brasileira, e tambem pelas interconexoes entre o conteudo programatico e a historia da ciencia que sua leitura permite inferir.

Uma atividade experimental sobre sombras inspirada em um cartum

A drawing by Gervasio Troche, depicting a father walking along with his daughter, shows a larger shadow for the girl. The image was used in a proposal for reconceptualization of experimental activities, as advocated by Hodson. The drawing was presented to optics high school students, and they should discuss their physical viability, and also build and test an experimental model based on the figure. A model was rebuilt and presented in this article, along with its algebraic formulation and the description of the educational activities. The activity was deemed motivational for students, as it allowed a greater understanding about the geometrical optics models and scientific practices.

Demonstração algébrica das condições de ocorrência do desvio mínimo em um prisma de base triangular

The minimum deviation of a ray of light refracted by adjacent faces of a triangular prism is widely used in experimental situations, and is commonly present in the academic literature and in the textbooks. Although, the mathematical proof of the conditions of occurrence of minimum deviation is not easily founded in textbooks, and this deviation is therefore attributed to experimental data. In this work, a mathematical proof of the necessary condition for the minimal deviation is presented. We believe this proof is accessible to undergraduate students of introductory physics and calculus courses, therefore helping to fill this literature gap.

Atividades experimentais no ensino de óptica: uma revisão

We present in this work a review of articles dealing on experimentation in optics teaching, between the years 1998 to 2010. The reviewed articles were published in the following journals: Caderno Brasileiro de Ensino de Fisica, Revista Brasileira de Ensino de Fisica and Fisica na Escola. The purpose of this review is to provide an updated overview of research in optical experiments on divided and classified by themes: nature of light, reflection, refraction, diffraction, polarization, interference and scattering. We also emphasize the need for production of similar revisions in other thematic areas.
