Male breast cancer. I. Histologic typing and grading of 187 Danish cases

Jakob Visfeldt; Ole Scheike

In a series comprising 265 male patients with breast cancer, histologic typing and grading were carried out in 187 cases using the WHO Classification. Among the 187 patients, a total of 30 cases of special cancer types were found (22 carcinomas and 8 sarcomas). There were no carcinomas of lobular type. The sarcomas in our series had a relatively high frequency and a favorable prognosis. Histologic grading was carried out in 150 carcinomas. The 30 cases of special types and 7 cases with insufficient tumor tissue were excluded. The distribution of the 150 cases was: 29% with Grade I, 54% with Grade II, and 17% with Grade III. The histologic grading was correlated with prognosis, and a significant fall in the 5‐year survival rate was found from Grade I to II and from Grade II to III.

Clonal Evolution Demonstrated by Flow Cytometric DNA Analysis of a Human Colonic Carcinoma Grown in Nude Mice

A spontaneous change in DNA content of a human colonic carcinoma grown in nude mice was observed fortuitously. The tumor initially had a G1 cell DNA content of 1.3 times that of normal cells. Flow cytometric DNA analysis showed in transplant generation 56 the appearance of a new subpopulation which in three passages completely overgrew the original population. The DNA content of the new subpopulation was twice that of the original population. The observation supports the hypothesis of clonal evolution of tumor cell populations. The growth rates of the tumor before and after the change showed no significant difference (p greater than 0.05). Cell kinetic factors, therefore, offer no obvious explanation of how the overgrowth took place. It is not known whether the original population disappeared completely or survived as a small population below the detection limit. The heterogeneity created by clonal evolution of a tumor would be less pronounced if old subpopulations often become extinct as new ones emerge. Heterogeneity of human tumors is of clinical importance because the individual subpopulations may have different sensitivity patterns to antineoplastic drugs.

Ovarian Morphology in Early and Late Human Pregnancy

Jørgen Starup; Jakob Visfeldt

Abstract. Representative ovarian biopsies were obtained from 30 pregnant women aged 15 to 40. Group I consisted of 6 women with pregnancies of a gestational age of 9 to 18 weeks, and group II consisted of 24 women with pregnancies of a gestational age of 36 to 42 weeks.

Ovarian morphology and pituitary gonadotrophins in serum during and after long-term treatment with oral contraceptives.

Jørgen Starup; Jakob Visfeldt

Abstract. The aim of the present investigation was to directly correlate the development of ovarian follicles with the levels of FSH and LH in serum during long‐term treatment with oral contraceptives in order to discover to what extent follicular maturation beyond the stage of early primary follicles depends upon stimulation with pituitary gonadotropins.
