Abstract The magnetic susceptibility of [Co(en) 3 ] 2 [Cu 2 Cl 8 ]Cl 2 ·2H 2 O exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition near 15.5°K. Spin coupling is confirmed by EPR measurements. The near infrared spectrum of the complex is also reported.

The low-temperature magnetic susceptibility of the dimeric complex di-µ-hydroxybis(bipyridyl)dicopper(II) sulphate pentahydrate gives further support for the conclusion that the complex has a triplet ground state with a singlet excited state lying about 48 cm–1 above the ground state.

The [Cu2Cl8]4– ion, consisting of two distorted trigonal bipyramids linked by two chlorine bridges, has been shown to occur in Co(en)3CuCl5(H2O), and the magnetic properties of the dimer are found to be consistent with exchange coupled copper ions.
