Scottish Migration to England, 1400–1560

James A. Galloway; Ian Murray

Abstract Sizeable numbers of Scots emigrated to England during the later Middle Ages, despite continuing hostilities between the two countries. Most moved into northern England, often on a seasonal or temporary basis. Southern England was home to fewer, but better off and more skilled Scottish migrants, whose distribution appears to reflect trade links. An increase in numbers of Scots in London and the south‐east between circa 1440 and circa 1480 may reflect increased trade, or the contraction of economic opportunities within Scotland.
