Awakening the Topoi: Sources of Invention in the New Rhetoric's Argument Model

Although they display the virtue of elegance, models of argument—including the Toulmin model—are poor sources of invention. The New Rhetorics account of argumentation sometimes resembles a model, and like a model provides no direct aid to invention. However, the treatise is so philosophically and hermeneutically rich in its account, and so true to the reality of argumentation, that it reveals sources of invention that are commonly overlooked. More particularly, it identifies the sites of primary invention, and it retrieves the topoi, though in a sleeping form, waiting to be awakened.

Computational Models of Rhetorical Argument

Theories of rhetoric offer rich characterisations of communication that in many cases might usefully be exploited in a computational system. Reviews of contributing theories, including those in rhetoric, computational linguistics and knowledge representation together lay a foundation for exploring different approaches to building computational models of rhetoric that remain true to the spirit of the original, but extend them to be formalisable in software. The exercise is shown both to have significant advantages in various areas of artificial intelligence, and also to have benefit for the study of rhetoric.

Being unreasonable: Perelman and the problem of fallacies

Most work on fallacies continues to conceptualize fallacious reasoning as involving a breach of a formal or quasi-formal rule. Chaim Perelmans theory of argumentation provides a way to conceptualize fallacies in a completely different way. His approach depends on an understanding of standards of rationality as essentially connected with conceptions of universality. Such an approach allows one to get beyond some of the basic problems of fallacy theory, and turns informal logic toward substantive philosophical questions. I show this by reinterpreting three so-called fallacies - theargumentum ad baculum, equivocation and composition/division - in the light of Perelmans account.

The Deep Rhetoric of Plato’s Gorgias

심층 수사학이란 기존의 이해된 어떤 것을 전달하고 수신하는 의사소통의 차원을 넘어서 신들 마저도 설득할 수 있는, 영혼을 인도하는 로고스의 힘을 의미한다. 심층 수사학이란 철학과 수사학의 상호 소통을 전제한다. 심층 수사학은 윤리학을 형이상학이나 인식론 보다 우선시 한다는 점에서 수사적 윤리학이다. 심층 수사학에서의 소통이란 존재의 소통이며 상호 개시이다. 인간은 초월적 존재이며 초월은 소통 가능성을 열어 보인다. 소통이 유의미 하다는 점에서 인간의 현존재는 심층 수사학적인 사건이다. 실재가 존재한다는 것은 소통 가운데서 창조되고, 소통에 의해서 유지되며, 소통에 의해서 제약을 받는 다는 것을 의미한다. 심층 수사학이란 오랜 수사학 전통의 한 갈래이며, 철학적 관심과 접근법과 통궤에 있다는 점에서 심층 수사학과 철학은 불가분의 것이다. 플라톤의 대화면 『고르기아스』가 던지고 있는 “수사학이란 무엇인가?”라는 질문은 수사학과 철학의 관계에 대한 해묵은 질문이다. 플라톤과 고르기아스는 두 사람 모두 로고스 자체에 존재하고 있는 힘을 활용하고 이 힘과 연대하는 로고스의 기술인 철학/수사학에 출발한다. 철학적 수사학, 즉 심층 수사학이란 언어, 이성, 말뿐만 아니라 사물 자체의 이해와 소통 가능성을 열어 보이기 때문에 수사학에 대한 제한된 영역이나 폄하된 시각을 거부하고 새로운 가능성을 제시한다.
