Perspectives that emphasize links between workplace innovation and broader HR policies, particularly of a ‘mutual gains’ nature, have become increasingly influential. This paper analyses the links and tensions between workplace change and industrial relations systems in the context of attempts to create a shop-floor politics of partnership during a period of corporate restructuring in two spirits companies. We argue that interface tensions between the employment relationship, the labour process and organizational governance are inextricably linked to the outcomes of partnership initiatives. While there are positive outcomes to more integrated approaches to partnership, a range of industrial relations issues, notably the ambivalent position of shop-stewards, remains problematic.

This article addresses the issue of moral compunction among a sample of senior managers set against the background of their routine organizational participation. In considering what factors influence their moral sensibilities these managers were interviewed using an approach designed to elicit their perceptions concerning both the ethical and commercially imperative dimensions of their working lives. The qualitative data resulting from this inquiry, while tentative, indicates the primacy of the normative appeal of shareholder value, conditioned by the exigencies of engagement in corporate bureaucracies, including the maintenance of career and livelihood responsibilities. These conclusions indicate the magnitude of the obstacle that the normative business ethics project requires to overcome in order to fulfill its promise.

Considers marketing information and channel relationship issues raised by the commercialization of EFTPoS systems. Discusses the role and experience of the retailer, banker and consumer, and their evolving relationship in the context of electronic payment systems. Drawing on previous analysis of information flow within channels, where a dyadic relationship has been described, considers the triadic relationship created through the use of electronic payment systems at the point of sale, and the impact that consequent access to information will have on the relationship between bankers and retailers.

This chapter argues that there is a persistent, growing, unabated global discontent with mainstream, orthodox and excessively liberal or neoliberal economic discourse. This discontent is vague and complex, but it emanates from various populist sources outside the discipline of economics, from various critical quarters across the social sciences and from heterodox voices and associations within the field of economics (e.g., The World Economics Association [WEA]; The New Economics Foundation [NEF]).
