A CMOS LNA supporting multiple mobile video standards (MediaFLO, DVB-H, and ISDB-T) is implemented using a 0.18 mum CMOS process. The LNA uses a novel feedback configuration and implements an RF elliptic low-pass filter (LPF) response. Because of this elliptic LPF response, the receiver is able to operate concurrently with radio transmitter leakage from GSM, DCS, WLAN, and Bluetooth. The design decouples the feedback path from the main path to allow integration of the LPF as well as obtain wideband input matching. Measurement results show voltage gain of 25 dB, NF of 1.6 dB, and IIP3 of -2 dBm in MediaFLO mode. DVB-H mode demonstrates voltage gain of 25 dB, NF of 1.8 dB, and IIP3 of -1 dBm while achieving interference rejection greater than 70 dB.

An efficient and accurate analysis method to calculate the spectral spreading of a phase-modulated signal is presented. It accounts for two major non-idealities in a phase modulated system; (1) the phase error caused by circuit nonlinearity, (2) the additive spreading caused by LO spurious operation. The proposed method requires only a single-tone intermodulation simulation to fully characterize the spectral spreading in a phase-modulated system. Its accuracy is verified by comparing with the measurement results of a 1.75 GHz GSM RF transmitter.

A multi standard direct conversion receiver for digital video broadcast application is presented. This receiver supports MediaFLOtrade, DVB-H and ISDB-T standards. Broadband multi-standard operation is achieved with a reconfigurable LNA, broadband mixer, programmable bandwidth baseband filter, wide tuning range LC VCO with a fully integrated fractional-N synthesizer. A high linearity signal path enables concurrent operation with GSM transmitter. Out of band transmitter (TX) blockers (DCS/IMT, Bluetooth) are attenuated by a novel integrated elliptic low pass filter. The receiver is implemented in 0.18 mum CMOS process. In MediaFLOtrade mode this design achieves a cascaded noise figure (NF) of 2.7 dB and IIP3 of -8.2 dBm in the highest gain mode. In DVB-H mode this design achieves a cascaded noise figure of 2.5 dB and IIP3 of -3.3 dBm in the highest gain mode. The peak power dissipation is 162 mW and 190 mW (@2.1 V) in MediaFLOtrade and DVB-H mode respectively.
