Exophthalmos: Diagnosis and surgical treatment of intractable cases☆

James L. Poppen

Chromophobe pituitary adenoma. Current concepts of diagnosis and treatment.

James L. Poppen

Chromophobe pituitary adenomas occasionally attain sufficient size to impinge on the optic nerves or cause enlargement of the sella turcica. Headaches, visual changes, weight gain and loss of sexual drive are the chief complaints. Some disagreement exists as to whether operation should be performed immediately or an initial trial of radiation therapy tried. With high voltage x-ray treatment, however, 80 per cent of patients have improved so that no further treatment has been necessary, while 20 per cent have subsequently required operation.

Postgraduate Medicine | 1953

Intractable Exophthalmos in Thyroid Disease

James L. Poppen

The incidence of progressive exophthalmos in cases of thyroid disease and the pathologic changes that initiate the condition are discussed. Results of bilateral orbital decompression in 78 cases are reported, and the technic of the procedure is outlined.

The treatment of intracranial aneurysms.

James L. Poppen

Intracranial aneurysms are found much more frequently today because of the use of arteriography. Many patients can be saved by surgical intervention, either by the direct intracranial attach or by the indirect method of ligating the internal carotid artery in the neck. The hazards of surgical treatment are discussed.
