An automated water quality data acquisition system for use in aquaculture ponds

Thomas M. Losordo; Raul H. Piedrahita; James M. Ebeling

Abstract An automated water quality data acquisition system has been developed at the University of California, Davis (UCD). The self-contained microprocessor based system consists of a micrologger, a weather station and a unique water sampling raft. The system can monitor and record the following information on a routine basis: (a) weather data including solar irradiance, photosynthetically active radiation, wind speed, wind direction, air temperature, relative humidity and rainfall; (b) pond environmental data, taken at up to eight depths to a maximum of 175 cm, including dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH and photosynthetically active radiation. This paper describes the data acquisition system, its uses in aquaculture research, possible future improvements, and modifications for use in other water quality related research.

Use of Data Acquisition Systems in Aquaculture

Raul H. Piedrahita; James M. Ebeling; T.M. Losordo

Abstract Two data acquisition systems for aquaculture use are described, one is connected to an Apple II-c computer, and the second is a stand alone unit for field use. Details of construction and implementation are provided, including sample water temperature and climatological data. Techniques for future use of data acquisition systems in aquaculture are proposed.
