THE OLDER DRIVER AND MENTAL ILLNESS

The elderly are at risk of a variety of psychological problems that may impair their ability to drive safely. With the increasing numbers of older drivers on our roads, it is important that clinicians are able to advise patients about their fitness to drive. The regulations regarding medical fitness to drive in the United Kingdom have recently been changed, bringing them into line with those of the European Community. This article outlines the regulations regarding fitness to drive for the elderly mentally ill.

Depression in Older People: What does the Future Hold?

Demographic, economic and social changes over the next few decades are likely to have a significant effect on the care of the elderly. This personal view, from a United Kingdom perspective, examines some of these changes and assesses the impact they may have on the prevalence and treatment of depression in older people. Strategies for minimizing the marginalization of this group are discussed.
