Combining Complementary Ligands into one Framework for the Construction of a Ferromagnetically Coupled {[}Mn-12(III)] Wheel

Sergio Sanz; Jamie M. Frost; Thayalan Rajeshkumar; Scott J. Dalgarno; Gopalan Rajaraman; Wolfgang Wernsdorfer; Juergen Schnack; Paul J. Lusby; Euan K. Brechin

Phenolic oxime and diethanolamine moieties have been combined into one organic framework, resulting in the formation of a novel ligand type that can be employed to construct a rare and unusual dodecametallic Mn wheel, within which nearest neighbours are coupled ferromagnetically.

The use of the novel pro-ligand H4L combining the complimentary phenolic oxime and diethanolamine moieties in one organic framework, results in the formation of the first example of a [Mn(III)12] truncated tetrahedron and an extremely rare example of a Mn cage conforming to an Archimedean solid.

Assembly of a calix[4]arene-supported MnIIIMnII cluster mediated by halogen interactions

Stephanie M. Taylor; Jamie M. Frost; Ross McLellan; Ruaraidh D. McIntosh; Euan K. Brechin; Scott J. Dalgarno

A new calix[4]arene-supported MnIIIMnII cluster, formed by the introduction of 3,5-dichlorobenzoate to a system known to afford MnIII2MnII2 Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs), assembles in a layered manner through halogen interactions; structural and magnetic properties of this new cluster are presented.

Combining oxime-based [Mn6] clusters with cyanometalates: 1D chains of [Mn6] SMMs from [M(CN)2]− (M = Au, Ag)

Sergio Sanz; Jamie M. Frost; Giulia Lorusso; Marco Evangelisti; Mateusz B. Pitak; Simon J. Coles; Gary S. Nichol; Euan K. Brechin

The linear [M(CN)2](-) (M = Au, Ag) anions can be used as metalloligands in oxime-based Mn chemistry to afford 1D chains of [Mn(III)6] single-molecule magnets (SMMs).

A family of [Ni8] cages templated by μ6-peroxide from dioxygen activation

A family of exceptionally thermally stable [Ni8] cages is reported, each being templated by a rare η3:η3:μ6-O22− species produced by dioxygen activation, where the reducing agent for the O2 reduction appears to be the ligand used in the reaction mixtures, which was found within the nickel cages in its oxidized form.

Crystal structure of 2-hydroxy-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N-{2-hydroxy-3-[(E)-N-hydroxyethanimidoyl]-5-methylbenzyl}ethanaminium acetate monohydrate

Gary S. Nichol; Jamie M. Frost; Sergio Sanz; Euan K. Brechin

The structure of the title hydrated molecular salt, C14H23N2O4 +·C2H3O2 −·H2O, was determined as part of a wider study on the use of the molecule as a polydentate ligand in the synthesis of MnIII clusters with magnetic properties. The cation features intramolecular O—H⋯N and N—H⋯O hydrogen-bond interactions. The crystal structure features a range of intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions, principally O—H⋯O interactions between all three species in the asymmetric unit. An R 2 4(8) graph-set hydrogen-bonding motif between the anion and water molecules serves as a unit which links to the cation via the diethanolamine group. Each O atom of the acetate anion accepts two hydrogen bonds.
