Carbon sustainability framework to reduce CO 2 emissions in data centres

Mueen Uddin; Azizah Abdul Rahman; Jamshed Memon

Reducing the impact of greenhouse gases (CO2) on climate change in an attempt to tackle global warming issues is a challenge many companies and businesses are trying to undertake. Businesses across the globe need to take a leadership role in reducing their carbon footprint. This paper proposes a new IT-based carbon sustainability framework that provides a comprehensive strategy to reduce the emission of green house gases (CO2) from data centres in order to reduce the effects of global warming. The proposed IT sustainability framework reduces the overall cost of ownership in data centres by employing new technologies to increase the use of already installed servers and proposes metrics to measure the efficiency of data centres from time to time in terms of energy consumptions and CO2 emissions. The proposed framework also increases the awareness of implementing metrics and highlights the development of a sustainability strategy for data centre managers to implement energy saving and CO2 emission techniques to enable them to increase productivity and help businesses gain a competitive edge.

Entrepreneurial mentoring may not only help entrepreneurs to survive, but can also help them to avoid having to compromise their own responsibilities in a better and more sustainable environment, rather than simply pursuing a quest for profit. New start-ups will be more focused on using green technologies while developing their products at the same time. Research shows that such people are more inclined towards using greener products, provided the functionality and the price of the products are equivalent. This study proposes a theoretical framework for this purpose based on the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and Social Exchange Theory (SET). Integration of these theories will help explain why entrepreneurs want to be mentored, who influenced their intentions towards mentoring, what their preference is, in selecting a mentor, and what factors affect their relationship with a mentor. This conceptual model will help in the matchmaking of the right mentor with the right protege.

Green postal service framework to reduce CO2 emissions in postal service industry

Jamshed Memon; Mueen Uddin; Mohd Zaidi Abd Rozan

Reducing the impact of greenhouse gases on climate change is an attempt to tackle global warming issues. It is a challenge many companies and businesses are trying to undertake. The research proposed in this paper discusses online delivery of mails through online postal services to deliver mails electronically later be printed by service providers to deliver at destinations. This technique reduces cost, time and carbon emission caused by conventional postal delivery system. A green postal services framework was proposed to deliver and exchange mails destined to appropriate locations. It increases efficiency and reduces the emission of greenhouse gases hazardous for global warming. An algorithm is designed to help postal service provider to shift to a new paradigm of electronic postal services to improve the quality of service. Results clearly show that by implementing proposed framework there is an enormous amount of decrease in over all carbon footprints and costs.

Jamshed Memon; Mohd. Zaidi Abdul Rozan; Kamariah Ismail; Mueen Uddin; Dzurllkanian Daud

A mentor plays an important role in entrepreneurial development of an individual. He guides entrepreneurs from conception of business to product development and business growth. Previous literature on entrepreneurial learning is disseminated and not properly organized; it is difficult to even find pertinent and comprehensive articles on entrepreneurial learning. The research proposed in this article helps mentors to understand and find out what type of entrepreneurs need what kind of mentoring support. This article proposes a conceptual model for mentors and discusses that an entrepreneur may need different mentoring support and skills depending on the type of entrepreneurs, personality traits, or decision-making style and phase at which entrepreneurs are at that moment. This article will also help mentors in understanding what type of skills entrepreneurs need at each stage of mentoring relationship, that is, initiation, cultivation, separation, and redefinition stage.

Energy efficiency and environmental considerations for green data centres

Mueen Uddin; Asadullah Shah; Jamshed Memon

The advancement in information and communication technology based businesses and social practices in last few decades have transformed many, if not most, economies into e-economy and businesses into e-businesses. Technology has the potential to create sustainable business and society both in grim and green economic times. Data centres are found major culprits in consuming too much energy in their overall operations and generating huge amount of CO2. This paper determines the properties and attributes of green IT infrastructures and provides ways for achieving green sustainable businesses. The proposed green IT attributes and characteristics using virtualisation technology are very industrious and efficient for data centres to be more energy efficient and green, hence reducing the emission of greenhouse gases so that the overall effect on global warming can be reduced or even eliminated.
