Business simulation game for teaching multi-echelon supply chain management

Yuri Merkuryev; Galina Merkuryeva; Jana Bikovska; Jonas Hatem; Bram Desmet

This paper presents a new business game which helps to understand concepts developed in the ECLIPS project of the European Comission. The game provides an insight into different aspects of supply chain management, i.e., general supply chain mechanisms, non-cyclic and cyclic inventory replenishment policies. This allows for people who have no deep notion in this area to better understand project concepts and evaluate their efficiency in practice. Demonstrating concepts in a playful way is considered as more powerful and effective than purely explaining the underlying theory. The paper describes game rules, playing process and provides results of game test sessions.

Business Simulation Game Development for Education and Training in Supply Chain Management

Yuri Merkuryev; Jana Bikovska

This paper presents a simulation-based business game for training and education in the area of supply chain management. It starts with a short review of existing simulation games used for training and education in supply chain management, which is followed by a brief description of the ECLIPS game that has been developed for providing an insight into various aspects of supply chain management, with opportunity to analyze different supply chain structures and control mechanisms. In particular, the application of the ECLIPS game to comparison of different supply chain inventory management policies, including non-cyclic and cyclic ones, is provided. Also, the paper presents a special computer-aided tool that allows testing and evaluating various scenarios of the ECLIPS game. The method of scenario evaluation is described as well.

Scenario-Based Planning And Management Of Simulation Game: A Review

Jana Bikovska; Galina Merkuryeva

This paper is devoted to scenario development methodology for planning and management of business simulation games. Nowadays the high efficiency of simulation games as a training method is obvious. Requirements to this kind of training are increasing. Modern computer technologies allow developing complex simulation games that are close to real life conditions. Generation of game scenarios is not a trivial problem; besides, management of such complex games requires some formal approach.

Enhancing Intelligence Of Business Simulation Games

Jana Bikovska; Galina Merkuryeva; Robert W. Grubbström

Developing computer simulation games incorporates different computing aspects such as computer graphic, artificial intelligence, simulation itself, software engineering, etc. This paper is focusing on building intelligence into business simulation games by embedding intelligent agents into its software. Agents are proposed to generate simulation scenarios; define initial conditions of the game and/or respond to players’ decisions by changing an economical environment according to the goals set by a game leader, and the agent’s behavioural rules. Other applications of intelligent agents such as when an agent simulates a tutor or acts as a virtual player are also discussed in the paper.

An agent-directed multisimulation framework for simulation games management

Galina Merkuryeva; Jana Bikovska; Tuncer I. Ören

The paper presents an overview of agent-directed applications in management of business simulation games. Functionality of agents and agent-based software platforms are analysed. The scenario-based game management concept is introduced in the paper. An agentdirected multisimulation framework for management of simulation games is proposed. An illustrative example for a specific web-based logistic simulation game is provided.
