A comparative investigation of the effects of fungicides on Saprolegnia parasitica and Aphanomyces astaci

D. J. Alderman; Jane L. Polglase

Saprolegnia parasitica and Aphanomyces astaci are important Oomycete parasites of aquatic animals. The sensitivity of these two fungi to a range of fungicides was investigated and A. astaci was found to be significantly more susceptible to systemic anti-phycomycete agents. The most effective compound was found to be malachite green where toxicity was found to be directly related to length of exposure and, for A. astaci , to temperature.

A scanning electron microscope study of oxolinic acid treatment of burn spot lesions of Macrobrachium rosenbergii

A.A. El-Gamal; D.J. Alderman; C.J. Rodgers; Jane L. Polglase; D.J. Macintosh

Abstract Black burn spot exoskeletal lesions of bacterial aetiology are a frequent feature of crustaceans in intensive culture. The appearance under the scanning electron microscope of such lesions associated with Aeromonas hydrophila on Macrobrachium rosenbergii is described. The effect of oxolinic acid treatment on these lesions is discussed.

Infection of skin wounds in the lesser octopus, Eledone cirrhosa, by Cladosporium sphaerospermum

Jane L. Polglase; N.J. Dix; A. M. Bullock

The isolation of Cladosporium sphaerospermum from skin wounds of the lesser octopus, Eledone cirrhosa , is described. Inoculation of the isolate into healthy animals, with subsequent growth, confirmed the parasitic nature of this association. The adaption of this terrestrial fungus to growth in the marine environment is discussed.
