Recent research on consumer-directed home care in the Netherlands, England, Germany and the United States

Consumer-directed home care is a major innovation in long-term community care in the United States and Europe. Typically, consumer-directed programmes allow the consumer as the client to hire, train, supervise and fire the home care worker. In an extensive comparative study of consumer directed care carried out in late 2003 in the US, England, the Netherlands and Germany, information was obtained from interviews with government officials, researchers and representatives of provider and consumer groups during September to November of 2002. The interviews were supplemented by newspaper and journal articles, government documents, and provider, consumer and research publications.
