Pattern recogniyion in HCI: a viable approach?

In spite of the interest shown in the subject at the time, three years on very little has changed. There are still a number of researchers working in the area but there have been few significant developments. There are several possible reasons for this. One is that the diversity of the communities (HCI, pattern recognition, neural networks) has led to a failure of communication. HCI researchers have the problems but perhaps not the expertise in pattern recognition to attack them.
