White Box Pairwise Test Case Generation

Jangbok Kim; Kyunghee Choi; Daniel Hoffman; Gihyun Jung

Pairwise testing is an intuitive approach to test case generation, and has already seen use in commercial tools and practical applications. Pairwise testing is black box, in the sense that the test selection is independent of the internal structure of the system. We present a white box extension which selects additional test cases for the system based on specifications for one or more internal sub- operations. We have developed a novel algorithm for generating test cases for the full system which achieve pairwise coverage of the sub-operations. We have evaluated the algorithm using a case study, which indicates the practicality and effectiveness of the approach.

Reducing worm detection time and false alarm in virus throttling

Jangbok Kim; Jaehong Shim; Gihyun Jung; Kyunghee Choi

One of problems of virus throttling algorithm, a worm early detection technique to reduce the speed of worm spread, is that it is too sensitive to burstiness in the number of connection requests. The algorithm proposed in this paper reduces the sensitivity and false alarm with weighted average queue length that smoothes sudden traffic changes. Based on an observation that normal connection requests passing through a network has a strong locality in destination IP addresses, the proposed algorithm counts the number of connection requests with different destinations, in contrast to simple length of delay queue as in the typical throttling algorithm. The queue length measuring strategy also helps reduce worm detection time and false alarm.

Tackling worm detection speed and false alarm in virus throttling

Jangbok Kim; Jaehong Shim; Gihyun Jung; Kyunghee Choi

This paper proposes a technique to improve the performance of virus throttling algorithm, a worm virus early detection technique. The proposed modified throttling algorithm may speed up detecting worm spread and lower the possibility of false alarm to burst innocent connection requests. Based on an observation that normal connection requests passing through a network has a strong locality in destination IP addresses, the proposed algorithm counts the number of connection requests with different destinations, in contrast to simple length of delay queue as in the typical throttling algorithm. Moreover, the proposed algorithm utilizes the trend value of weighted average queue length for reducing worm detection time. The performance is empirically verified in various aspects.

A Heuristic Session Distribution Algorithm for Switch with Multiple Output Links

Jaehong Shim; Jangbok Kim; Kyung-Hee Choi; Gihyun Jung

We propose a heuristic session allocation algorithm for switch with multiple output links, named SCDF (Shortest Class Delay First) algorithm. The proposed SCDF algorithm allocates a new session to an output link with the smallest estimated average packet delay among those of sessions that belong to the same class. The empirical study proves that SCDF shows the best performance comparing those of other competitive algorithms, in terms of balancing packet delay difference and maximizing throughput.
