Telecommunications and Teaching Practices: What Leads to Change?.

Janice M. Stuhlmann

ABSTRACT This study explored the question: “What circumstances and experiences lead some teachers to incorporate telecommunications into their teaching practices, while others do not?” To investigate this question, six case studies of teachers involved in a telecommunications project were developed. Three teachers had relatively high levels of participation in project activities, and the other three were not participating. This was a qualitative study, and data were collected through the use of guided interviews and analyzed using content analysis. The elements of trustworthiness were established through triangulation of sources, peer debriefing, member checks, and thick description. The findings indicated that teachers who were integrating telecommunications into their teaching practices valued the use of an interactive learning network and had figured out how to use telecommunications instructionally. A Football Coach for Bayou Sara

Richard Fossey; Janice M. Stuhlmann

In this case, a recently-hired teacher is arrested for child abuse. Students are asked to review the school districts hiring process, the teachers job application, and references to determine whether a bad hiring decision might have been avoided had the district used better hiring practices. The case is designed for a class in personnel relations or human resources management. It can also be used in a course on school law.

Finding the money: how to locate grant information state by state in the U.S.A.

Janice M. Stuhlmann; Jodi Giroux; Scott Grissom; Rosalee Wolfe

Many educators want to get funding for projects, but they do not know where to look for grant information. Often, an educator must call several different offices at their state department of education to gain information. This is t ime consuming and can be frustrating. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive list of state funding agencies. This information should be useful to anyone seeking funding opportunities in their state. It may also be helpful for grant writers to view the individual Web sites of various states for additional information. This article contains only information about state funding opportunities.A more comprehensive list, which includes information about foundations and government funding opportunities, is available on the SIGGRAPH 97 Educators Program CD-ROM.
