Biological Invasions | 2006
Jannike Falk-Petersen; Thomas Bøhn; Odd Terje Sandlund
The study of biological invasions has triggered the production of a diversity of concepts. The terminology has, however, often been applied inconsistently and inaccurately. This article lists and assesses the most commonly used terms and concepts in invasion ecology. In each case the most coherent definition and use is suggested.
Marine Resource Economics | 2013
Jannike Falk-Petersen; Claire W. Armstrong
Abstract The bio-economically optimal stock size of the alien invasive red king crab in the Barents Sea, representing a commercial value as well as a threat to the ecosystem and its services, is explored assuming linear as well as non-linear relationships between crab stock size and ecosystem damage. The results show that the management goal of harvesting the crab at maximum sustainable yield cannot be reconciled with the overall objective of the Barents Sea management plan of securing ecosystem structure. The importance of identifying the correct damage relationship is demonstrated by large differences in optimal stock sizes and altered sensitivity of the models to input parameters. The analysis also shows the importance of knowing the carrying capacity of the crab stock, as well as the carrying capacity of the natural ecosystem with respect to the crab. JEL Classification Codes: Q2, Q5
Marine Enzymes for Biocatalysis#R##N#Sources, Biocatalytic Characteristics and Bioprocesses of Marine Enzymes | 2013
Claire W. Armstrong; Jannike Falk-Petersen; Inga Wigdahl Kaspersen
Abstract: This chapter presents a brief history of marine bioprospecting, and illustrates the activity in the field today, especially with regard to marine enzymes and pharmaceuticals. Marine bioprospecting is furthermore discussed in the light of an ecosystem service and valuation framework, in part explaining public investment in bioprospecting activities. Issues connected to conflicts between conservation interests and bioprospecting, and the potential for bioprospecting to encourage nature conservation, are presented.
