History of the Gdańsk Pre-Instrumental and Instrumental Record of Meteorological Observations and Analysis of Selected Air Pressure Observations

Janusz Filipiak; Mirosław Miętus

The purpose of the paper is to describe the history of meteorological observations in Gdansk during pre-instrumental period as well as during the instrumental one till 1900. Air pressure data were used to assess the quality of data and metadata. On the basis of the results of short climatological analysis the problems connected with the methodology of the measurements, incomplete metadata and interpretations of the data were examined. The comparative analysis of the series from Gdansk and homogenous data from Swedish stations Uppsala and Stockholm revealed some discrepancies. Although the problems concerning for example anomalously high values of air pressure in Gdansk in the beginning of the nineteenth century appeared, the results of analysis of this element in Gdansk did not reveal the errors in data which could eliminate them from the further analysis.

ABSTRACT An isotopic monitoring was undertaken in 2012–2014 at Lake Żabińskie (Mazurian Lakeland, NE Poland). The aim was to identify the factors and processes controlling an isotopic composition of the lake water and to explore the mechanism responsible for recording the climatic signal in stable isotope composition of deposited carbonates. δ18O and δ2H in the precipitation, lake water column, inflows and outflow, δ18O and δ13C in the carbonate fraction of sediments trapped in the water column were recorded with monthly resolution. A relationship between δ18O and δ2H in local precipitation was used to estimate the local meteoric water line. The dataset obtained for the water enabled to identify the modification of the water’s isotopic composition due to evaporation, connected with seasonal lake water stratification and mixing patterns. Statistically significant correlation coefficients suggest that the δ18O of the carbonate fraction in the sediment traps depends on the δ18O of rainfall water and on air temperature. The fractionation coefficient α shows that in summer months the carbonate precipitation process is closest to equilibrium. As expected for an exorheic lake, no significant correlation was observed between δ18O and δ13C in precipitated carbonate.

Errata - Contemporary changes of thermal conditions in Poland, 1951-2015

Małgorzata Owczarek; Janusz Filipiak

Errata - The main subject of the research whose outcomes are presented in this paper is the spatial and temporal variability of thermal conditions in Poland during the period from 1951 to 2015. The analysis revealed the occurrence of symptoms indicating a systematic and sustained warming. Significant growth is observed in mean and extreme temperatures and their extreme percentiles, as well as in annual number of hot days, warm waves and their duration. In turn, downward trends are noted in series of the annual number of frost days, as well as in the number of cold waves and their duration. The results obtained confirm the thermal pattern determined for the whole region, especially for the southern part of the Baltic Sea Basin.
