The Volume of Plasma and Erythrocytes in Individual Bones and in the Spleen of Mice under Physiological Conditions and with Acute Radiation-Induced Atrophy of the Haemopoietic Tissue

Using labelled erythrocytes and human serum albumin, the volume of circulating erythrocytes and plasma was determined in the spleen and individual parts of the skeleton of mice under physiological conditions and 48 h after X-irradiation with a dose of 2,87 Gy. The results are significant for the interpretation of the method of incorporation of labelled iron into haemopoietic organs.

The Preparation of 59Fe-Labelled Transferrin of High Radioactivity for Ferrokinetic Studies on Small Laboratory Animals

A modified method of Cavill for the separation of the complex of isotopically labelled iron and transferrin from unbound iron residues is described. The method employing an ion exchanger permits to obtain preparations with a high radioactivity per volume unit of solution, which is necessary for carrying out ferrokinetic studies on small laboratory animals.

Using the model of mice affected by thyroid hormones, a ferrokinetic analysis was made of the repeatedly observed paradoxical fall in the incorporation of labelled iron into the bone marrow under conditions of the overall stimulation of erythrocyte formation.
