Growing the Ross broiler parent according to the target growth curve ensures that males and females achieve optimum lifetime performance and well-being. Accurate control of growth will lead to uniformity and sexual maturity, which are of crucial importance for the production of hygienic, healthy, and fertile eggs of high quality. This study examined the growth of Ross 308 broiler breeder flocks from hatch to 35 wk of age to identify which growth model would describe the growth of these animals most accurately. Growth was measured and modeled using linear and nonlinear functions, and the experimental growth curves were compared with target curves from the Parent Stock Management Manual for Ross 308 (Aviagen). Broiler breeder flock R6 (in-season from February until October) and flock R7 (off-season from August until April) were kept in an environmentally controlled breeder house from hatch until 35 wk of age. Three nonlinear growth functions (logistic, Gompertz, and Richards) and 3 polynomial functions (linear, second-order, and third-order) were applied. Parameters of the models were estimated by the least squares procedure. The fit of growth curves to experimental data was assessed using R(2). A t-test was used to identify significant differences in the goodness of fit of the model to the different data sets (breeder manual, R6, and R7). The third-order polynomial gave the best fit to the Ross 308 parent broiler BW data, with R(2) ranging from 0.992 to 0.998. Among the nonlinear growth functions, the Richards model gave the best fit to the data, with R(2) ranging from 0.992 to 0.995. The advantage of second- and higher-order polynomial models is that they can be linearized and their parameters estimated by linear regression.

The method of latent semantic indexing (LSI) is an information retrieval technique using a low-rank singular value decomposition (SVD) of the term-document matrix. Although the LSI method has empirical success, it suffers from the lack of interpretation for the low-rank approximation and, consequently, the lack of controls for accomplishing specific tasks in information retrieval. A method introduced by Dhillon and Modha is an improvement in that direction. It uses centroids of clusters or so called concept decomposition for lowering the rank of the term-document matrix. We focus on improvements of that method using fuzzy k-means algorithm. Also, we compare the precision of information retrieval for the two above methods.

In this paper we have analysed concetrations of heavy metals (lead, copper, nickel, zink, mercury, cadmium, and chromium) in wastewater along highways in Croatia. We have used standard statistical methods: analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis test and principal analysis. Analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to detect factors that influence the concentration of lead, copper, nickel, and zink in wastewater. We have investigated the influence of the highway section, the side of a highway, and the influence of the season of the year. Principal components were used to identify groups of elements with similar characteristics in wastewater.

Abstract This paper offers a brief overview of the research of ICT utilization and benefits of its usage. The results of several important studies conducted worldwide are presented. One of them is a study by the World Economic Forum that we use as the basis of our research. This study covers 134 countries, NRI (Network Readiness Index) is used as a parameter to distinguish the readiness of different countries to adopt ICT. NRI consists of 68 indicators that are organized into three groups. Each group describes one of the three main factors crucial for effective utilization of ICT: Environment, Readiness and Usage. The observed countries are divided into four groups (leaders, followers, league III and league IV) and classification by a decision tree is conducted. The decision tree method is applied to each of the three main factors and the results are presented by means of F1 measure.

In this paper we investigate possibility of using phrases of flexible length in classification of textual documents as an extension to classic bag of words document representation where documents are represented using single words as index terms. The investigation is conducted on collection of articles from Vecernji list. It is shown that usage of flexible length phrases improves precision of automatic document classification and there are indications that such approach could be used for genre classification

In this paper, a novel approach of modelling time series of nitrate concentrations in drinking water by nonlinear growth functions is proposed. An almost constant increase in the average values of nitrate concentrations occurred at the Vinokovščak wellfield in the county of Varaždin, Croatia, in the period between 1998 and 2013. Our hypothesis was that the time series would be well adjusted to the nonlinear growth function with asymptotic properties after smoothing performed by the moving average method. We used a general growth model which does not have asymptotic properties and the logistic, Gompertz and Richards functions which do have asymptotic properties. Last three growth functions were modified based on the knowledge of a constant presence of basic nitrate concentrations in the drinking water before growth. The fit of growth curves to experimental data was assessed using R2 and Aikake’s information criterion. The modified growth functions gave the best fit to the smoothed time series of nitrate concentrations with R2 ranging from 0.9960 to 0.9986.
