Interim Editor's Note

Jason Baird Jackson

In 2014, I served as JFR Interim Editor. During that time, work began on this special issue. I fielded initial inquiries from the proposed special issue editors and I encouraged submission of the collection for peer review and evaluation. It was agreed at that time that I would manage peer review for this collection and its in di vidual constituents up until such a time as it was rejected in whole or in part or fully accepted in whole or in part. This arrangement was developed in the context in which one of the special issue editors—Michael Dylan Foster—was slated to become the journal’s permanent editor. Professor Foster was not involved in the management of peer review for this issue and JFR’s normal peer review, revision, and rejection/acceptance practices were followed. The decision to accept the content presented in this issue was made by me.

American Indian Lacrosse: Little Brother of War

Jason Baird Jackson; Thomas Vennum

To understand the aboriginal roots of lacrosse, one must enter a world of spiritual belief and magic where players sewed inchworms into the innards of lacrosse balls and medicine men gazed at miniature lacrosse sticks to predict future events, where bits of bat wings were twisted into the sticks netting, and where famous players were-and are still-buried with their sticks. Here Thomas Vennum brings this world to life.
