Technological capabilities as determinants of the success of technology transfer projects

Jason Z. Yin

Abstract This paper empirically examines the effect of indigenous technological capability (ITC) on the performance of technology transfer projects in recipient firms in a less developed country (LDC). The data were obtained from 116 transfer projects in China by means of questionnaires and site interviews. As predicted, the results indicated that ITC factors are determinants of the economic and technological success of the transfer projects. The findings suggest that LDC recipient firms should formulate a strategy for acquiring foreign technology to be consistent with their technological capability.

China's Business Engagement in Africa

Jason Z. Yin; Sofia Vaschetto

This article investigates Chinas business activities in Africa from the viewpoint of strategy. After a historical review of Chinese-African relations and identification of Chinas strategic objectives, we compare Chinas engagement in Africa with that of Western powers during the colonial and postcolonial eras. The analysis indicates that Chinas differentiation strategy, based on noninterference, soft power, and complementarity, has been largely successful in winning the trust of African host nations and cultivating bankable relationships. Moreover, Chinas well-coordinated trade, investment, and aid activities have been instrumental in building the infrastructure for sustainable economic growth in the region.

Computer-integrated manufacturing and competitive performance Moderating effects of organization-wide integration

Raghavan Parthasarthy; Jason Z. Yin

Abstract The research reported here examined the conditions under which computer-integrated manufacturing (CIMs) machine-related benefits can be effectively exploited in competition. Using the integration theme that many have implicitly proposed to analyze CIM implementation, this research sought to test whether a CIM user with a higher level of tool integration enjoyed a higher competitive performance when there was a corresponding degree of organizational integration. Data from 110 CIM users belonging to the automotive, aerospace, medical instruments, and consumer appliance businesses provide strong support to this extended integration hypothesis. Data indicate that integration in operational jobs, competitive criteria, and relationship with customers/ suppliers significantly moderate CIMs impact on competitive performance. Task integration, commonly recommended in this context, has only main effects. It is necessary, but not sufficient, to transform CIM benefits into competitive benefits. We discuss our findings and their implications to technology management theory and practice.

Managing process innovation through incremental improvements: Empirical evidence in the petroleum refining industry

Jason Z. Yin

Abstract This paper developed a present value index (PVI) model to offer a new solution to differing the effects of radical innovation and incremental improvement. After comparing the return from an initial-radical-process innovation and the return from the incremental changes in petroleum refining processes, it was found that incremental improvements generated higher returns than from its initial innovations. The findings suggest that, in contrast to a conventional research and development (R&D) strategy with a focus on state-of-art innovations, manufacturing companies should place sufficient emphasis on incremental capital and operating improvements to fully exploit economic benefits from an innovation.

Testing the causes of discontinuities in the black market exchange rate in China

Jason Z. Yin; William A. Stoever

Abstract This paper reports the results of empirical tests of the determinants of the Dornbush et al . model of black market exchange rates, and the effects of government policy interventions on the currency black-market premium in China. We found that only the real official exchange rate from the Dornbusch et al . model was a significant determinant of the premium. Some government policy initiatives, however, were significantly related to major changes in the premium. The paper examines policy implications of these findings.

Relating learning capability to the success of computer-integrated manufacturing

Jason Z. Yin

Abstract With rapid advances in both electronic and mechanical technologies, computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems increasingly give users greater flexibility, quality, speed and productivity. However, the exploration and exploitation of sophisticated CIM systems necessitate organizational learning. This study empirically relates organizational learning capability to the performance of CIM firms (or plants). The results of a hierarchical regression analysis of 124 firms indicates that while learning capability plays a significant role overall, proper alignment of learning capabilities with CIM techniques will lead to better performance.

Hong-bo Guan; Jason Z. Yin

This paper focus on the strategy comparison of Sino-US B2C E-commerce Company. Amazon and Dang are selected as the B2C representative of two countries. Firstly the stock data, operation data and website data of the two companies are collected and compared by graph or table, which shows the scale of Amazon is almost 100 times more than Dang. Secondly the evaluation system are built based on AHP and Entropy method to evaluated the two company, Outcome shows Dang is not bad and some indexes are better than Amazon and final evaluated score is 40% of amazon. Thirdly BCG matrix is used to show Dang has a big question and it must be get more market share and Amazon is very good business as a star business. Fourthly, sales of Taobao ranks first in E-marketplace in China and surpassed the Amazon in 2010.

Analysis of Competitiveness Condition of International Patents of Subsea Production Equipment

Tao Zhang; Jason Z. Yin

This paper analyzes the international patent status of subsea production equipment via aspects of the general trend of patent, patent country distribution, IPC structure and main patent applicants, etc., and put recommendation of technology R&D and industry development of subsea production equipment under the patent analysis. The analysis results show that international patent technology of offshore oil equipment has already been maturing. The United States, the United Kingdom, WIPO and Canada are the power countries of the patented technology of subsea production equipment with much more accumulated patents and maintain growth trend of patent applications. In particular in recent years, patent applications of subsea production equipment have rapidly increasing trend which indicates the arrival of a new round of technological revolution.
