1970, 1925, 2009: whistling in the stadium as a form of protest

Abstract The discovery and documentation of a clandestine handbill dating from the end of Franco’s regime calling on supporters to whistle in protest at the dictator at the Camp Nou provides the departure point for a revision of the relation between football as the game of the masses and citizen protest in the case of Catalan political (and sporting) culture of the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries. It is based on antecedents and more recent cases of protests at big sporting events, in view of the continuing use of whistling at anthems or government authorities under different political regimes.

Ens consta que la saviesa popular hi toca mes del que a aquest temps d’enquestes, telefons mobils i targetes de credit li ve de gust admetre, per aixo em fa gracia, en veure la pausada pero continuada intrusio de la cultura catalana a Internet, recordar les cancons de quan era petit: “Dalt del tren, tots anem-hi dalt del tren, hi ha lloc per tota la gent”, deiem, i “El tren pinxo de Banyoles es el mes bonic que hi ha, ple de llaunes i cassoles i barrets de capella”. I resulta que per una vegada a la vida hem pujat, efectivament, dalt del tren que passava per l’estacio de Catalunya i en cinc anys hem passat de gairebe res a prou pagines amb un contingut, a mes, apreciable i, sobretot, a un petit teixit de persones i institucions que han entes la importancia de la revolucio comunicativa que Internet representa i que hi teixeixen i projecten webs amb el convenciment dels conversos.
