The history of the development of combinations of estrogen and progesterone which inhibit ovulation without interferring with normal menstruation is reviewed with structural formulas of several synthetic estrogens and progesterones given. Any mature female desiring contraception may use contraceptive therapy provided she is tolerant of some of the side effects. 3 therapeutic regimes are described with instructions for taking the pills. Nausea weight change intermenstrual spotting of bleeding breast symptoms change in cramping are rated for Ortho Novum Provera-estrogen and Envoid. Therapy results in nearly 100% protection with a side effect incidence of from 36% to 15%. Benefits to the patients are relaxation of tension spontaneity of intercourse and possible anticarcinogenic effects. Use of Provest to control dysmenorrhea is described in a case history.() BB-G)
