The contemporary research on media effects has elaborated the agenda setting model according to which the media agenda would influence the public agenda. This model has had such success among researchers (particularly in the USA) that many of them have recently proposed to take it as a general conceptual frame for the study of the influence processes in political communication. This article critiques this extension of the model and underlines its limits, particularly with regard to the problem of influence between journalists and political sources.

The article analyses strategies employed by political journalists at Quebecs National Assembly to gain recognition of their symbolic power in political communication exchanges. These strategies, which depend on a journalists position in the system of interaction operating in his area of specialisation, consist of a double rhetoric of objectivity and critical expertise, coupled with a method of regulating the coverage of political events, based on co-operation among parliamentary journalists.
