Introduction: Lawyers, Doctors and Business Consultants

Jean-François Chanlat

Why are expert occupations interesting to study? This book reveals a great deal that is of interest about the current state of three key occupations: lawyers, doctors and management consultants. The conclusions are not always what you might expect. It reveals important differences of fortune between the occupations. While business consultancy is a growth area, there are significant differences within the industry between firms. Lawyers have been under ideological attack for many years but studies show that law firms have responded effectively in adverse circumstances. For other traditionally trained occupations, such as doctors, however, it is less clear what the future may demand in terms of their profession. There is a paradoxical quality to the current pattern of demand for expert labour: demand not only varies a good deal between occupations, but it seems to bear little relationship to whether the skills are found in traditional or new occupations.

A caminho de uma nova etica das relaçöes nas organizaçöes

Jean-François Chanlat

The subject matter on ethics has been recovered from philosophy due to the frequency that young executives show egotistic attitudes in detriment to concern towards others. This egocentric attitude leads to the vanishment ofinterest for the institution itself. On the other hand, the organizations have also failed in responding to the interests of the individuais. The author expresses his uneasiness towards a world oriented to economic values and proposes a renewal of ethics in relations inside the organizations, basedupon the development of what he calls individual ethics articulated to collective ethics. Language and thinking in organization studies

Jean-François Chanlat

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to clarify the relationship between language, thinking and society for explaining the degree of visibility of the French organizational studies (OS) production. Design/methodology/approach – This paper proposes a sociological analysis based on Bourdieu field to understand the variation of reception the French OS production have had among the Anglo-Saxon field. The paper aims to underline some key elements, which can explain the differences of reception experienced by the French OS scientists. The paper opted for a general review using historical data; reviews of OS literature; and Google scholar, Web of Science and major OS Journal data. Findings – The paper provides some evidence about how the degree of visibility of the French OS production is related to translation, cognitive and social resonance, producer place in the scientific network and relationship between the fields. It suggests that the degree of visibility is the result of a complex set of socio-cognitive schemes, social issues raised by the scholar and the place occupied by the researcher in the field. Originality/value – The paper brings interesting ideas concerning the international development of the OS field, the degree of visibility of diverse contributions coming from non-English speaking researchers, notably the French ones, and how the dialogue between different linguistic and social universes can be ameliorated.

Management, Diversity, Equal Opportunity, and Social Cohesion in France : The Republic Resistant To Differences

Jean-François Chanlat

This chapter focuses on diversity issues in France. It shows how these issues came historically in the French context and how the main tensions generated, notably the equality-diversity and universality-diversity tensions, are not understandable without a knowledge of the French Republicanism which gives to the foundations of the French social fabric its peculiarities.

Conducting a Diversity Policy as a Management Change Agent: A Key Issue to an Organisation’s Performance

Maria Giuseppina Bruna; Jean-François Chanlat; Mathieu Chauvet

The sociological and demographic reality of recent decades has meant that western companies have seen an evolution towards greater diversification among their staff members. The implementing of a diversity policy in a company cannot be reduced to a managerial fashion or fad, to professional rhetoric or to a set of superficial or illusory initiatives, but it can aim at social transformation. That is why, in this chapter, the authors have chosen to portray the deployment of such an approach from the standpoint of an organisation-changing process, which can, at the same time, alter the language, the standards and the practices of the organisation and led them at the end to identify three managerial levers capable of transforming team diversity into performance enhancers.

Higher Education in Management: The Case of Canada

Jean-François Chanlat; Allain Joly

Canada is a bi-cultural country and this has contributed to the development of a two-tier government system. As a result, education has been a provincial endeavour—even though the central government has found several ways to have its say in education, mostly through stipend programmes for students and academics.
