Abstract The Learning Climate (LC) is an important component of a favorable learning environment in Health and Physical Education (HPE). Three valid observation systems and the questionnaire for teacher interaction (QTI) were used in conjunction to describe and analyse the nature and quality of the LC prevailing in HPE lessons conducted by 25 student teachers (STs) with high school students (n = 565). Descriptive, correlational and multivariate non parametric techniques were performed. Despite a high mean degree of proximity perceived by the students, LC was rather unfavorable to learning because mean appropriate motor engagement was low. However, a very high degree of proximity and influence at the same time corresponds to learning conditions favorable to appropriate motor engagement. This study helped to identify and to weight the variables which are more closely associated with a positive LC , a topic that should be the focus of HPE initial teacher training.

ABSTRACT A large diversity of theoretical frameworks exists in the physical education literature. This article focuses on two of those frameworks to examine their compatibility and their complementarity. The classroom ecology paradigm concentrates on the balance between three task systems, two vectors, and programs of actions proposed by the physical education teacher and negotiated by students. The didactique research program studies the teaching and learning processes using the concepts of didactic contract and didactic milieu that focus on how the knowledge content emerges within teacher and students’ joint action. The article underlines the complementarity and the compatibility of the two frameworks when analyzing teaching and learning in physical education. It argues that the gray areas left by the classroom ecology paradigm could be filled with the insights of the didactique research program. A concise example of how the two frameworks have already been utilized is presented.

L’objectif de cette etude est de mieux comprendre le role des orientations de valeur dans la reception par des enseignants d’education physique et a la sante Quebecois d’un nouveau programme. Pour cela, nous presentons les changements apportes par la reforme scolaire des programmes au Quebec ainsi que les travaux de recherche rapportant les ecarts entre programme prescrit et programme reel developpe par les enseignants en classe. Puis nous recueillons a travers une recherche exploratoire par questionnaire les orientations de valeur d’un groupe d’enseignants (n = 25) en les comparant a celles privilegiees par le nouveau programme. Les resultats indiquent des convergences entre les orientations de valeur privilegiees par les enseignants et par le programme pour le processus d’apprentissage et la responsabilisation sociale tandis qu’apparait un decalage concernant la maitrise de la discipline. Il ressort une appropriation partielle par les enseignants des nouvelles orientations nationales pour l’education physique et a la sante. Ces resultats nous conduisent a discuter pour ce groupe d’enseignants le role des orientations de valeur dans la phase de reception des programmes nationaux et a apporter un eclairage sur les processus de changement des pratiques d’enseignement dans un contexte de reforme.
