Three patients with pleural effusion were found to have pancreaticopleural fistulas passing through an opening in the diaphragm are reported. In one case the effusion was purulent and originated from an abscess of the pancreas. Retrograde pancreatography during operation defined the course of the fistula. In two other cases the fistula was demonstrated by radiography after intrapleural injection of contrast medium. The diagnostic importance of injecting contrast medium early into the pleural cavity in cases of effusion rich in amylase, before lung expansion obscures the fistula, is emphasized. Cases of pancreaticopleural fistula may be commoner than supposed.

Intravenously administered bombesin lowered basal PRL levels in conscious male rats and prevented the morphine, bremazocine and stress-induced PRL secretion. The same dose of bombesin had no effect on PRL levels in alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine pretreated rats and did not affect haloperidol-stimulated PRL release. These results show that bombesin given intravenously acts as an inhibitor of PRL secretion and suggests that it does not act on the lactotrope itself but rather by an increase of the inhibitory dopaminergic tone.

Lipase activity, bile salt concentration and intraluminal phase of lipid resorption are investigated in 4 different regions of the dog small intestine. Lipase activity remains constant throughout the first half of the small intestine but drops to low values in the distal small gut. Conjugated bile salts concentration rises progressively from the duodenum until the upper limit of the distal quarter of the small bowel is reached, where it commences to drop until zero is reached at the end of the small bowel. In the duodenum the low pH (

SummaryA case of chronic pancreatitis complicated by pancreatic abscess is deported. The abscess fistulised spontaneously into mediastinum, leading to bilateral purulent pleurisy. Pancreatic duct drainage into intestinal lumen and antibiotherapy were followed by recovery. Pertinent literature is reviewed.
