Optical Switching of Chiral Smectic C at Room Temperature

J. P. Le Pesant; Jean-Noel Perbet; Bruno Mourey; Michel Hareng; G. Decobert; J. C. Dubois

New chiral liquid crystal mixtures have been prepared, composed of a material exhibiting a smectic C phase and possessing a negative dielectric anisotropy and of a chiral material with or without, ...

Physical Parameters of a Fluid Discotic Mesophase

Bruno Mourey; Jean-Noel Perbet; Michel Hareng; S. Le Berre

Abstract Freederickz transition in a fluid discotic mesophase of disk like molecules has been investigated. Some physical parameters of this mesophase, such as birefringence, conductivities and dielectric constants, splay elastic constant K 11 and viscosity coefficient γ1, have been measured at various temperatures.

The direct-view matrix-addressed smectic a LCD panel: Dynamic behavior

Michel Hareng; S. Le Berre; Bruno Mourey; Paul Moutou; Jean-Noel Perbet; Lydie Thirant

We present an analytical solution of the heat-flow equation applied to a direct-view thermally matrix-addressed smectic LCD panel. Using experimental values of the operating parameters of an actual panel, we compute the corresponding temperature profiles in the liquid-crystal layer. These theoretical results are compared with temperature measurements on a test cell to verify the model. Finally, we show how the thermal analysis can improve the understanding of the behavior of the smectic display, and thus to optimize the cell design for the widest possible operating margin.

Flat smectic liquid crystal display panel

S. Le Berre; Michel Hareng; Robert Hehlen; Jean-Noel Perbet

Abstract First results of a direct-view flat-panel display for computer terminal applications are presented. This panel uses an effect which has already been reported by the authors for a TV projection display.
