Investigations on glasses in the Sb2S3Agl system

Abstract New glasses have been prepared in the Sb 2 S 3 AgI system. A glass domain is observed from 0.90Sb 2 S 3 0.10AgI to 0.33Sb 2 S 3 0.67AgI. A structural approach is proposed on the basis of infrared spectroscopy studies. It shows the presence of Sb 2 S 2 I 4 groups such as those observed in SbSI and SbS 3 pyramids like in Sb 2 S 3 . Thermal and chemical properties have been studied. Ionic conductivity has been determined. An Arrhenius behavior is verified between 25 °C and T g over the whole glass domain. A comparative study with glasses belonging to the Sb 2 S 2 Ag 2 S system has been undertaken.

Adventitial Cysts of the Popliteal Artery

Adventitial cysts of the popliteal artery are rare. Their pathogenesis is debated. In one of the two cases reported here, there was a communication between the arterial cyst and the articulation of the knee. This supports the embryonic theory that the articular synovium and adventitial cysts have the same mesenchymal origins. Treatment is surgical, with simple evacuation of the contents of the cyst in uncomplicated cases, excision and reconstruction in the others.

A vitreous domain has been investigated in the quaternary system BaF2CaF2AlF3BeF2. Several optical properties have been reported for a typical composition range Ba15Ca27−xNdxAl31Be27F231+x with 0 ≤ x < 8: refractive index, adsorption and fluorescence spectra, oscillator strengths and fluorescence life time. These properties have been compared with those of other glasses previously proposed as laser host structures. The performances are among the best so far obtained for such applications.
