Conceptions of Teacher Education

This article examines four conceptual approaches to teacher education. Each articulates a particular vision for the aim of teacher preparation grounded in a distinctive argument for the purposes of education and features of good teaching. Each has a historical grounding and contemporary resonance. The article outlines each approach, providing the scholarly grounding for previous and contemporary understandings along with illustrative descriptions of exemplary course- or program-level instantiations.
