A study guide can be seen as a management tool which allows the teacher to exercise his responsibilities while at the same time giving the student an important part to play in managing his own learning.

Printed Material for Patients with Heart Disease: are we really ‘educating patients?’

A study of the readability of ten booklets concerning recovery from coronary heart disease was undertaken. The booklets ranged from standard to difficult to read with none of the booklets classed in the fairly easy to read category. Layout and typography did not facilitate patient understanding. For these reasons, it is concluded that educational materials devised for patients may fail to meet their objectives.

In todays world of high technology most medical teachers have at their disposal video equipment and computers to assist them with their teaching and improve student learning. There is however still a place for the tape/slide programme and a great need for guidelines to assist teachers who wish to design and produce their own tapelslide material. This paper offers some helpful hints learned the hard way—from experience.
