Working with multiracial clients in therapy: Bridging theory, research, and practice.

Jennifer Teramoto Pedrotti; Lisa M. Edwards; Shane J. Lopez

The growing multiracial population has resulted in a need for professional psychologists to become knowledgeable about unique identity issues that may influence therapy with multiracial clients. The overarching goal of this article is to provide clinicians with current theory and research, as well as particular therapeutic strategies that will be useful in their work with multiracial clients. Specifically, this article (a) provides a brief review of some prevalent models of multiracial identity; (b) discusses several common themes derived from theory and research about multiracial identity, which should be taken into account when working with this population; and (c) offers some specific techniques and strategies that may be used in therapy to develop more accurate conceptualizations of multiracial clients. Jeana L. Magyar-Moe; Jennifer Teramoto Pedrotti; Lisa M. Edwards; Alicia Ito Ford; Stephanie E. Petersen; Heather N. Rasmussen; Jamie A. Ryder

Multicultural training at internship sites is a critical component in the preparation of doctoral-level psychologists, so the quality of this training is of the utmost importance. In the following study, the authors examine multicultural training from the perspective of predoctoral interns and training directors at counseling center sites that offer a major or minor rotation in multicultural therapy. Results suggest that perspectives vary between intems and training directors and that there is a great difference in the type of criteria used by each site as evidence of a major or minor rotation. The need for more standardized criteria to define major and minor rotations and suggestions for the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers, internship training directors, and prospective interns are discussed.

Broadening perspectives: Strategies to infuse multiculturalism into a positive psychology course

Jennifer Teramoto Pedrotti

As educators in any area of psychology, one has a responsibility to address issues of multicultural competence and to provide inclusive education for students from all walks of life. The specific discipline of positive psychology is aptly poised to use multiculturally competent teaching to undo some of the past pathologizing of individuals from traditionally marginalized groups. To this end, it is imperative that positive psychology courses operate from a framework that incorporates cultural context as a key feature in understanding the value, manifestation, and functioning of both strengths and weaknesses. Following a brief history of the integration of multiculturalism within the field of positive psychology, benefits are discussed with regard to infusing cultural context into a positive psychology course, and specific strategies for accomplishing this goal are offered.

Utilizing the Strengths of Our Cultures

Lisa M. Edwards; Jennifer Teramoto Pedrotti

Abstract Historically, psychology has operated from a pathology-based perspective. In the last several years, however, efforts have been made to balance this view with an acknowledgement of individual strengths and assets. For biracial women and girls, this approach may be particularly useful. Through the utilization of several techniques, including solution-focused interventions and narrative approaches to treatment, therapists can empower their female biracial clients through development of their strengths.
