We present a novel wide band VOA with low PDL. Our device is a symmetric MZI-based PLC component that uses y-junctions and adiabatic couplers. We describe a model that explains PDL for this VOA and enables polarization control.

We present a novel wide band and robust planar lightwave circuit (PLC) switching unit having two switching states with low cross talk. The CMI based SU does not require post fabrication trimming and can be used as a normally dark VOA.

We present a detailed concept for microscopic and macroscopic thermal management of a planar, integrated optical device. Deep-etched grooves minimize the power consumption of thermo-optical switches. The layout minimize thermal crosstalk between different components.

We built gain tilt compensator in silica on silicon using adiabatic mode multiplexer and y-branch based Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Process and design tolerant building blocks allow flexibility in achieving required response, either normally bright or tilted, and excellent optical performance.

We present a highly integrated, reconfigurable optical add-/drop multiplexer. A single planar silica/silicon substrate serves as integration platform for arrayed waveguide gratings, switch matrix, attenuators and photodiodes of the 20 channel device.
