A real-time nonlinear MPC scheme with emission constraints for heavy-duty diesel engines

This contribution introduces a nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for diesel engines. Inequality constraints, e.g. emission limits, are taken into account by an augmented Lagrangian formulation in order to provide a time and memory efficient algorithm that is suitable for a future ECU implementation. In view of a practical application and for the sake of a modular framework, the MPC scheme assumes the existence of a subordinate air path controller and therefore accounts for the closed-loop air path dynamics within the MPC prediction. The performance and computational efficiency of the MPC scheme are demonstrated by means of GT-POWER simulations and a runtime analysis.

This contribution demonstrates the practical realizability of a tailored real-time nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) scheme for off-highway diesel engines. Besides controlling the torque and emissions, the MPC accounts for inequality constraints such as the maximum cylinder pressure by means of an augmented Lagrangian formulation. In addition, the heat-up of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system, e.g. for the regeneration of a diesel particulate filter, is facilitated with a warm-start strategy that enables the smooth activation of the inequality constraints. Experimental results from a testbench of the off-highway diesel engine within a wide operation range demonstrate the efficiency of the control scheme.
