Bacterial strains growing in river sediments were screened to identify an organic solvent-tolerant strain of Pseudomonas. Using this screen, Pseudomonas sp. BCNU 106 was isolated on the basis of its ability to grow on benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and three xylene isomers, o-, m- and p-xylene, as its sole carbon source. BCNU 106 was identified as a gram-negative, rod-shaped aerobic and mesophilic bacterium, which grew in liquid media containing high concentrations of organic solvents. 16S rDNA analysis classified BCNU 106 as a new member of the genus Pseudomonas. BCNU 106 was distinguishable from other Pseudomonas strains that are tolerant to organic solvents in that the isolate had the ability to utilize all three xylene isomers as well as benzene, toluene and ethylbenzene. The unique properties of the isolate such as solvent-tolerance and the ability to degrade xylene isomers may have important implications for the efficient treatment of solvent wastes.

An organic solvent-tolerant lipase of Pseudomonas sp. BCNU 154 that was isolated from wastewater in the industrial complex region had optimal activity at and pH 8. This crude extracellular lipase from BCNU 154 exhibited maximum stability in toluene, retaining about 6.01 U/ml (117.53%) activity for 2 h. , , , and ions and triton X-100 activated the enzymes, whereas , , and ions inhibited their activity. Pseudomonas sp. BCNU 154 lipase revealed stable activity comparable to that of the commercial immobilized Novozym 435. Thus, this organic solvent-tolerant lipase could have potential as a whole cell biocatalyst in industrial chemical processes without the use of immobilization.

【In this study, which aims to estimate the volume of greenhouse gas emitted by road transportation vehicles in Changwon City, the emission rate was calculated on the basis of the actual traffic volume measured at major crossroads and compared with the results obtained from the methodology used to estimate the greenhouse gas emissions of road transportation provided in the IPCC 2006 GL guidelines (Tier 1, Tier 3). Analysis of the results of the comparison showed that the Tier 1 methodology, which was applied in the estimation of the rate of greenhouse gas emissions, carries a high probability of underestimation, while the Tier 3 methodology carries a relatively high probability of overestimation. Therefore, when considering the assignment of permissible rates of emission to local governments, the application of the methodology, i.e. whether one uses Tier 1 or Tier 3, may result in a large difference in the rate of allowable emissions. It is suggested that a method based on the actual volume of traffic would be the most reasonable one with regard to the development of a realistic plan.】

Biological assessments of the macrobenthos community were carried out in the Seomjin River from May 2009 to November 2010. Fishes from 106 species belonging to 24 families and 10 orders were collected from the survey sites. Locational dominant species differed among sites, and the numbers of species and individuals differed depending on site, although six sites were not significantly different on the same survey dates. Across sites, the average number of species was 38.3, ranging from five at site 1 to 66 at site 2 in May 2009. Site 2 had the highest number of species on November 2009, while site 3 had the lowest. Arthropods dominated the macrobenthic community at species (63.2% May) and individual (60.9% November) levels. DO, BOD, and COD were shown to have the greatest effect on the numbers of macrobenthos. Peaks in the diversity index trended downwards from upstream to downstream sites.

A sewage was treated using serially combined vertical(VFCW)and horizontal flow sand-filled reed constructed wetland(HFCW) with intermittent feeding. The sand had 1 3 diameter. The sewage entering the sewage treatment ∼ mm plant of Gyeonsang National University was fed into the reed constructed wetland bed for 10 minutes every 6 hours at the hydraulic load of 314 L/ day based on the surface ares of the VFCW. In the VFCW effluent pH values m2. were lower than those of the influent, whereas they were higher than those of the influent in the HFCW. DO values were increased in VFCW, but they were decreased in the HFCW. The OTR was 58.72 g O2/ day in the VFCW m2ᆞ and 7.72 g O2/ day in the HFCW. m2ᆞ Average removal efficiencies were SS 94.80%, BOD 90.77%, CODCr 85.87%, CODMn 87.72%, T-N 64.74%, NH4 -N 86.44%, T-P 87.70%. Nearly, half of T-N in the effluent was NO3 -N but the concentration of NO2 -N in the effluent was less than 0.64 mg/L

Biological assessments of the macro-benthos community were carried out in the Hwang River from May 2009 to November 2010. The collected macro-benthos from the surveyed sites (St.) comprised 72 species belonging to 46 families, 17 orders, and four divisions. The emergence of species and individuals were dependent on the type and location of riverbed where they grew. St. 5, St. 7, and St. 9 had similar types of biomass, as their riverbeds were composed of boulders, gravel, etc., whereas St. 5, St. 6, St. 8, and St. 10 were located in sandy beds; therefore, featured similar benthic animals. Biomass tended to decrease on moving downstream along the river. Arthropods dominated the macro-benthos community both numerically (at individual level) and quantitatively (at species level), with a dominance of 84.7 % at the level of species. Mollusca showed the second highest dominance of 8.3 %, while Annelida and Platyhelminthes comprised 5.6 % and 1.4 %, respectively. Eight of every ten sites (80 %) were oligosaprobic according to the saprobic determination. Only two sites, St. 6 and St. 8, were -mesosaprobic.

AbstractThis study investigated whether or not the complete treatment of high strength municipal wastewater of arid countries through a jet loop anaerobic membrane bioreactor is possible, and whether the treatment could make the wastewater as well as its ingredients available for further material recycling or energy recovery. The experiment was conduct with glucose-based wastewater of 400–600 mg DOC/L (1,000–1,500 mg COD/L). The results of the experiment showed that the effluent concentration of the system was always below 30 mg DOC (75 mg COD/L and 60 mg BOD/L)/L (the total degradation efficiency of 95%) at the steady state and an average biogas of 0.42 m3/kg CODeliminated could be produced. So it was found that organic ingredients of municipal wastewater in arid countries dose not solely present pollutants to be treated, but can serve as a resource. But the performance of the membrane filtration fell short of expectations because of the high portion of the finest particle (90% of sludge particle (X90) <...

A biological assessments of fish community structure were carried out in the lower reach of Seomjin River from May 2009 to November 2010. The collected fish from the six surveyed sites were 63 species belonging to 24 families, and 10 orders. Although species was different depending on sites, the numbers of individuals were not shown significance on sites. Locational dominant species were different. For example, the dominant species on May were Zacco platypus at W-1, Zacco temminckii at W-2, Acanthogobius flavimanus at W-3 and W-4, and Leiognathus nuchalis at W-5 and W-6. There is no seasonal differences in species. Species diversity was the best up to 2.64 on May at W-1 from 1.33 on November at W-6. As a result of an analysis about environmental factors for the numbers of fish species and individuals in each surveyed sites, the most effective groups were DO, BOD, and COD. The proportional difference was high on May than November between transient and asymptotic projections for population size and population growth rate for simulations starting at the current or theoretical stage distribution.
