Fiber dispersion coupled with chirp parameter of the emitting laser impacts the optical transmission system performance. Fiber dispersion causes the propagating pulses to spread and overlap, and the chirp parameter produces a wavelength shift arising from the intensity variation of the directly modulated laser (DML). For optical transmission systems, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation technique has proved to be an attractive approach to overcome optical fiber impairments in optical access networks as well as in long haul optical networks. Coupled with the Levin Campello bit-loading algorithm, adaptively modulated optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AMOOFDM) optimizes the data rate by taking into consideration the channel quality of each subcarrier. This paper shows system performance for optical links starting with an optical back-to-back (BtB) connection and ending with 125 km of single mode fiber (SMF) with a fixed optical budget of 30 dB for all distances.

Statistical analysis of the Cyclic Prefix impact on indoor PLC capacity

Meryem Ouzzif; Jérôme Le Masson

This paper aims at presenting the impact of the Cyclic Prefix (CP) length on the maximal achievable throughput for multicarrier modulations used in Power Line Communications (PLC). The maximal throughputs including the interference caused by a channel impulse response length exceeding the cyclic prefix length are calculated and compared to simulation results. The statistical distribution of the optimal cyclic prefix length is conducted using channel measurements that were carried out by Orange Labs in different residential sites. Statistical analysis helps determine the best CP lengths configurations that approach the optimal achievable throughputs.

Stationary Interference Cancellation in Upstream Coordinated DSL Using a Turbo-MMSE Receiver

Issam Wahibi; Meryem Ouzzif; Jérôme Le Masson; Samir Saoudi

We investigate the scenario of an upstream coordinated DSL transmission innpresence of spatial-correlated noise. Joint signal processing helps mitigate this noise and reduceninternal interference effects between coordinated users. We propose to couple noise whitening withna mean-squared error iterative receiver in order to approach the matched filter bound of the DSLncoordinated system. The convergence of the iterative scheme in this scenario is predicted usingnEXIT charts under realistic transmission conditions.

Alien crosstalk elimination in digital subscriber line systems

Ahmad Al Amayreh; Jérôme Le Masson; Maryline Hélard; Meryem Ouzzif

Elimination of alien crosstalk in coordinated digital subscriber line systems is investigated in this study. In the upstream, the process of crosstalk elimination may take advantage of available coordination at the receiver side. As the signal received at the coordinated terminals can be corrupted by alien crosstalk, the reception process involves passing the signals received at the coordinated terminals through a spatial whitening operation. As part of the contribution in this study, a method is proposed to obtain the spatial whitening filter coefficients. These coefficients are estimated from the cyclic spectrum of alien crosstalk received at the coordinated system terminals, where transmission at the coordinated system is controlled to allow separating the cyclic spectra of both coordinated system and alien crosstalk signals. This study includes evaluation of the whitening receiver performance taking into account the effects of estimation errors. Theoretical derivations are illustrated by numerical results obtained for VDSL2 application.
