64.2: Design and Characterization of a Compensator for High Contrast LCoS Projection Systems

Kim Leong Tan; Karen Denise Hendrix; Markus Duelli; David M. Shemo; Aurelie Ledeur; Jerry Zieba; Mike Greenberg

We describe the design and contrast measurement results of a high performance contrast enhancer for an LCoS-based projection display that has these attributes: complete a/c-plate compensation, accurate retardance targeting, excellent retardance magnitude and axis uniformity and environmentally durable. An overall system contrast of more than 4500:1 under f/2.4 cone illumination has been obtained.

P-236L: Late-News Poster: Light-flux Reliability Testing of Trim Retarders for LCOS RPTV Light Engines

David M. Shemo; Vince Stockette; Aurelie Ledeur; Jerry Zieba; Robert E. Hahn

Trim retarders (TR) used in LCOS RPTV engines must maintain their retardance characteristics over the service lifetime. A light-flux test platform was developed for predicting TR lifetime using accelerated life testing methodology. The JDSU BCE™ (“Birefringent Contrast Enhancer”) TR is demonstrated to meet target lifetime expectancy for consumer RPTV systems.

Performance factors, selection, and metrology of adhesives for optical applications

Jerry Zieba; Hiren V. Shah; Heather Aldridge

Several performance factors such as spectral properties, hardness, thermal stability, glass transition temperature, and out-gassing need to be taken into consideration when selecting an appropriate adhesive. Optical applications require that the selected adhesive not only assure mechanical integrity of the assembled element but also support its optical performance. This paper discusses how to select an adhesive for some common optical applications and also demonstrates the use of analytical methods in the metrology of optical adhesives.
