Photonics Applications in Astronomy, Communications, Industry, and High-Energy Physics Experiments 2010 | 2010
Jerzy Gajda; Ryszard S. Romaniuk
The paper presents chosen development threads of laser technology and associated branches of optoelectronics in this country. An occasion to summarize the work and show their current status is 50 years anniversary of construction of the first laser. The first laser in Poland was launched successfully in 1969, nearly simultaneously at WAT and PW. Domestic achievements in this area are summarized every three years by a Symposium on Laser Technology held traditionally in Swinoujscie. The work carried on in this country concern technology of laser materials, construction of new lasers and associated equipment as well as laser applications. Many technical teams participate in laser oriented European structural and framework projects.
Optical Fibers and Their Applications 2012 | 2013
Ryszard S. Romaniuk; Jerzy Gajda
Laser technology research community in this country and in this region is concentrated mainly at universities. A periodic symposium gathers this community and invited guests from this geographical region to summarize the current achievements. The 2012 Symposium summarized research and technical achievements done during the period of 2010- 2012. The main developments are focused in such areas like: semiconductor lasers, optical fiber amplifiers and lasers, and applications in optical fiber communications, optical fiber sensory networks, medicine, environment monitoring and protection, as well as safety and security.
Photonics Applications in Astronomy, Communications, Industry, and High-Energy Physics Experiments 2012 | 2012
Jerzy Gajda; Ryszard S. Romaniuk
The research and technical achievements in the area of lasers are summarized every three years by the National Symposium on Laser Technology held in the Baltic See Resort Świnoujście near Szczecin, Poland. The paper presents a preview of the symposium works to be shown and debated during this key event in September 2012. There are shown development tendencies of laser materials and technologies and laser associated branches of optoelectronics in this country, including the efforts of academia, governmental institutes, research businesses and industry. The second branch of the symposium works are laser applications, where the laser systems operators and laser users present their achievements. Topical tracks of the meeting are presented, as well as the keynote and invited subjects delivered by key representatives of the laser industry.

The interferometric method for ferrule geometrical parameters measuring and testing is presented. The geometrical parameters are defined according to the IEC international standards. The quality of the ferrule face has important influence on transmission parameters of optical connectors like the attenuation and reflectance. The measurements results of the spherical height for FC-APC, SC-APC and E2000-APC are presented in this work. The high value of protrusion has influence on thermal and mechanical resistance of optical connectors. The problem is presented for the temperature and vibration tests.

Modern optical transmission systems require both high-bit rate and long distances. Solitons are considered to be the best solution to the dispersive problem, as they preserve their shape over long distances. There are two types of solitons (PAS, DMS), which have application in optical transmission systems. In both fiber optic amplifiers are used, but DMS additionally uses dispersion management technique to achieve nearly unlimited propagation distances. Soliton WDM has many advantages, which make it attractive as far as data transmission is concerned. Some features of the transmission have been analyzed in the OptSim simulation software (ARTIS Software Corporation)5.

In this paper the authors present an example of optical transmission system based on soliton technology. Implementation of wavelength division multiplexing enables achievement of 40 Gbps in one channel. In described example a multipointmultipoint topology was applied and there the programmable WSXC optical cross connect was used. Model of such system was implemented in OptSim simulation software (ARTIS Software Corporation)9. Finally an error-free soliton transmission was obtained on haul from 1300 to 1800 km.
