Reconfigurable E-shaped patch antennas

Jerzy Guterman; Antonio A. Moreira; Custodio Peixeiro; Yahya Rahmat-Samii

This paper discusses the potential of E-shaped patches to be used in reconfigurable antennas. It is shown that the application of a PIFA configuration to dual-band E-shaped patches gives the freedom of independently tuning two resonances in a very wide frequency range, without affecting the antenna general structure and external dimensions. An application of these features to reconfigurable quasi-omnidirectional back-to-back E-shaped patch for laptops is demonstrated. To prove the concept a very simple model of RF MEMS switches is used in a dual-band laptop reconfigurable antenna prototype. In spite of frequency bands toggling (between IEEE 802.11b/g /2.44 GHz/ or WiMAX /3.45 GHz/ and IEEE 802.11a /5.25 GHz or 5.775 GHz/) the radiation pattern is always almost omnidirectional.

Radiation from Commercially Viable Antennas for PCMCIA Cards Housed in Laptops

Jerzy Guterman; Yahya Rahmat-Samii; Antonio A. Moreira; Custodio Peixeiro

This study evaluates laptop terminal housing effects on the radiation patterns of popular 2.4 GHz antennas mounted on PCMCIA cards: sleeve dipole and inverted-F antenna (IFA). The antennas far field patterns of freestanding WLAN/WPAN wireless cards are compared for cards inserted in different positions in a laptop chassis. Our results show that IFAs are more robust to housing effects and keep fair omnidirectionality in the horizontal plane whereas sleeve dipoles patterns are notably altered.

Omnidirectional wrapped microstrip antenna for WLAN applications in laptop computers

Jerzy Guterman; Antonio A. Moreira; Custodio Peixeiro

An omnidirectional low profile microstrip antenna for WLAN applications in laptop computers is presented. By wrapping the patch antenna around the screen edge, very good omnidirectionality is achieved. The designed structure, fed by a microstrip inverted line, can be easily integrated inside the display plastic cover. An antenna prototype has been fabricated and tested. Good agreement has been obtained between simulations and experimental results. An adequate coverage of the whole 2.4 GHz ISM band has been achieved.

Laptop Structure Effects on an Integrated Omnidirectional Wrapped Microstrip Antenna

Jerzy Guterman; Antonio A. Moreira; Custodio Peixeiro

In this paper the effects of a laptop structure on an ISM 2.4 GHz Omnidirectional Wrapped Microstrip Antenna (OWMA) are studied. The antenna parameters are evaluated both with numerical simulations and experimentally. In the experimental setup a real commercial laptop has been used. It is shown that the antenna input impedance is not affected by the presence of the keyboard structure, however, the antenna radiation pattern is significantly affected. The omnidirectionallity of the radiation pattern is strongly disturbed in the front hemisphere of the screen, while in the back hemisphere it remains quasi-omnidirectional.

Location of omnidirectional wrapped microstrip antennas in laptops for wireless applications

Jerzy Guterman; Antonio A. Moreira; Custodio Peixeiro

This paper evaluates the performance of omnidirectional wrapped microstrip antennas (OWMA) for different locations along laptop screen top and side edges. The antenna input parameters and the radiation characteristics, for the ISM 2.4 GHz band, are presented as a function of the patch position. Numerical results show that the OWMA properties are almost independent of its location. This happens even when the antennas are very close to the laptop screen corners

Omnidirectional wrapped microstrip antennas for MIMO linear arrangements in laptops

Jerzy Guterman; Antonio A. Moreira; Custodio Peixeiro

Multiple omnidirectional wrapped microstrip antenna (OWMA) elements integrated along the top edge of a laptop screen are studied in this paper. Linear arrangements of two and four antenna elements are considered. The performance is evaluated both in terms of the individual antenna characteristics and mutual coupling and correlation as a function of the element spacing. It is shown that OWMA elements are good candidates for MIMO applications in laptops
